Psychotria Viridis Germination
    #3305718 - 11/01/04 06:28 PM (17 years, 29 days ago)

I have traded for and received some psychotria viridis seeds. I have been able to find very little information on the proper propagation of this sacred plant. I know it is notoriously difficult to grow from seed, but I am wondering if anyone here has a significant amount of personal experience with growing this plant from seed.
I would like to know what the best method and soil composition is for the seeds to germinate in, and what is the best fertilizer regimen? Any help is greatly appreciated.

They are easy to germ, you just have to get fresh seeds or berries. Put the whole berry or individual seeds in the ground about 1/4" down. Keep the soil moist, put plastic wrap over the top and in from a week to a couple months, they come up. They like humidity and frequent watering but don't keep the soil wet all the time after they come up. I give mine peter's 20 20 20 whenever they look like they need it, maybe a couple times a month. They like shade or partial sun but not full sun. They make a good houseplant.

Stonehendge said it all!
Be very patient as they may take a couple months (or more) before germinating, don't give up and never let it dry fully.
Meanwhile you read how to deal with aphids, mites, flyer and lurking suckers because they'll try to munch on your plants...

This post makes it to sound "too easy"!

If the seed is not that fresh what one can do?

I was wondering if there are any triggering factors such as contact with ash, hydrogen peroxide, nicking of their cell etc etc...Has anyone experimented with those methods?

With seeds that are a pina all you can do is put them in the soil and wait. Cover the pot with saran wrap and it makes a humidity tent. Then just wait for the thing to sprout.
