Vermic and docs tek

I wanted to know if adding a couple of tablespoons of vermiculite to the doc wbs tek would slow the progress of the myc growth?

My wbs was really wet and so a added 3-4 tablespoons of vermiculite, the really small grain kind.  This was just today, but i am hoping that this will not dry out the wbs too much...

would the water that the vermiculite absorbs still be accessible to the growing myc?    :crazy2:

Did you add this before or after pressure cooking? If you noticed it before, then you should have drained your WBS more thoroughly. And if you noticed it after, then it should be considered too late if you want to practice sterile procedure. A WBS jar should not be opened until it is completely necessary.

What is important here, is that adding vermiculite isn't something that should needed to be done. Moisture problems should be corrected elsewhere in your procedure.

this was done b4 pc...yea im stubborn and so i add things here and there to the teks....got to follow d i r e c t i o n s!!!
next time DRAIN MORE...hm ic


but ...since i did add the vermiculite..will this slow down the progress of the myc growing? can the myc still use the water that the the vermiculite absorbed???????

The only problem here is with the TEK itself . I followed it my first go , to the "T" , with WBS and failed miserably :thumbdown:

The TEK says to drain for 20 minutes . Well , 20 minutes isn't long enough to drain . If you have a colander full of WBS draing , wet pockets form in the center . I use a plastic spatula to mix it up while it drains . After 20 minutes just draining , my WBS still drips quite a bit . I still follow Doc's , I just know how to make sure my WBS is drained properly now :grin:

I can see why you thought to add verm , your WBS was probably too moist . Good thinking , nice observation . Next time , just make sure your WBS doesn't drip when you give it a shake ot two while in the strainer .
