How do you know when your LC is done growing?

I've read that you should refrigerate your LC once it's used all the nutrients, but I used Karo so I can't really see anything in the jar other than the myc growth. It's been growing for 10 days now, there's about a cubic inch worth of myc growth in there floating around. I try stirring it to break it a little, I have broken glass pieces in there but it won't unclump for anything. Should I go ahead and toss it in the fridge?

i was using corn syrup for a little while for my LCs, but like you i only got a small little clump in like 3 or 4 days. then it would stop growing. i now use a dextros/malt extract solution, and my LCs have a much larger amount of myc then they use to have.

LC is the only to go

I can't tell if it's colonized 40% of the solution. The water was see-through from the beginning since karo is see through. I guess I'll throw it in the fridge.. been 10 days. Will it keep growing in the fridge at all? Can you get dextrose/malt extract solution at wal mart? I've heard good things about it.

no, you cannot just buy malt/dex solution.

go to a home brewing store.

buy dextrose.
buy light dry malt.

there you go.

use them to follow a good LC tek.

your LC will not continue to grow in the fridge,
if it does, the growth will be minimal at best.

I use a rule of mycelia to LC volume. When the mycelia constitutes 40-50% of the volume inside the LC, it's done.

On the LC recipe for malt/dex, try the following:

Recipe:
Using a full coffee pot of water (12 cups), I use 10 grams of dextrose and 10 grams of light malt extract for every 4 coffee cups of water. I am specifically saying "coffee cups" because a coffee cup is less than 8 oz. or a standard cup. Okay, so that equates to 30 grams of dextrose and 30 grams of light malt extract for every full pot.

Place the dex/malt into the area where you load the coffee using 2 coffee filters. Run the machine. This will yield 12 cups of liquid culture medium. Load these over 3 quart jars, cover and PC for 25 minutes at 15 PSI. Allow to cool overnight.

Inoculate each jar with 1cc of spore solution or 1/2-1cc of another liquid culture. Agitate the solution everyday with either a magnetic stirrer (stir bars loaded prior to PC'ing) or with marbles prior to PC'ing. You should have healthy colonization and be ready to inoculate within 7-10 days. Your solution should like something like this when it's ready:
