Bolete ID (asap?) with pics!!
    #5981261 -

My sister's neighbour gave us this bolete and as we're about to prepare a meal, I was wondering if we have a choice edible here. I suspect we do, but before we start slicing this thing up, I'd like to be sure. Here's the description:

Genus: boletus (100% sure, it's not suillus)

Habitat: on moors, seemingly not directly related to any trees

Size: cap ca. 10" wide, stipe ca. 5" long

Cap: brown, shiny. Rim is pale brown on places. Easily removable pellicule.

Pore colour: olive green; doesn't bruise (they turn darker upon bruising, but no real colour change appears to take place)

Flesh: tan to pale/whitish, faint mushroomy smell, taste mushroomy, definitely not sharp or bitter. No bruising effects.

Stem: Reticulate near the cap, somewhat wider at the base but not really bolbous

I think it's a king bolete, but I'm not 100% sure. Can anybody shed some light on this? It seems quite tasty...

(I'm trying to get some pics up in a couple of minutes)

Yep, got the pics online! Here they are:

General appearance, this is a big mofo...

No bruising on the flesh; note pore colour

Does this qualify as a bruising colour? It only seems to darken a bit due to the compression of the pores...

Clearly reticulate stem

So...do we have a choice edible here or should I toss it?

I'm usually no eager collector of mushrooms, but as this one was brought in by a neighbour and it looks kinda good to me, I'd like to give it a try...

That's Boletus edulis, or one of the species close enough that it makes no difference. It's a choice edible. Specimens of this species from the east tend to have more equal or club shaped stems, and from the west they tend to have more bulbous stems. The closest lookalike I've seen this year is B. pinicola, which looks identical, is equally good to eat, and bruises slightly reddish on the tubes.

Great photos, BTW. They show the important things for an ID.

Happy mushrooming!

Nice find. I can't wait until the rains arrive on the left coast. It's so dry here I won't even drive down the mountain roads. Every vehicle leaves a trail of airborne dust over a mile behind them. I'm surprised we don't have more fires.

Thanks a bunch, I'm looking forward to a good meal  It's been very rainy for the past weeks, so we have a very prolific and quite early mushroom season here.
