Need a Bolete ID please
    #1836979 - 08/21/03 11:29 AM (20 years, 7 months ago)

Found in the NE. Near oak and pine. Specimens approximately 6 inches tall when mature. The pores stained blue/black when poked with a finger. There seemed to be a veil like structure left on the younger one. It was quite whispy like cotton almost.

Is there any way to take a spore print from pored mushrooms? I tried with some Boletus dryophilus, but it just turned out as a black goo and little spores on the print. Thanks!

Old man of the woods they call that one, suppose to be edible too, but I sure as hell don't eat the ones I find. I never find any without bugs all burroughed through the pores.

Let me fetch a latin name quick...brb.

Taking a spore print from pored mushrooms is basically the same process as taking from gilled. You just need to insure that your specimens are not waterlogged, and slightly dry. By the way, the last two specimens look young enough to eat.

From what i have gathered, there are at least 2-3 different species of Strobilomyces, including "floccopus", which can only be told apart by looking at their spores under a microscope (microscopic differences only). They are all said to be edible, but like the Lizard King already stated, they are (all seperate specie of Old Man of The Woods) usually too beat up by the bugs to take home and cook. And like the Gumbydude stated, your younger specimens (pictured at the bottom) look good enough to eats.

Keep shroomin,
