Got a real beautiful grow room with auto air exchange, lighting, temperatures maintained perfectly. See the grow log for more details:

First flush on the casings in that setup were hella tiny and skinny. 2nd flush was much better, by the 5th flush they were real nice and big like the yshould be, up to 50g each.

Threw all those casings away and started new casings. The first flush is just about to break veils, and again, 1st flush is very pathetic. great pinset with about 150+ on each casing, but very small. Made sure they were very watered this time but apparently that didn't make a difference aside from the casings not shrinking as much as the last grow. See pics.







Whassup with such a shitty first flush if it's not the temps or lack of moisture to suck up? It's a b+ strain, perhaps just a shitty strain for first flush? Thoughts? It's a great setup though, just depressing for the first flushes.

Those are tiny little tupperware type containers. You're lucky they're that big. If you want bigger fruits, use a larger and deeper substrate.

All I can see from your grow log is you call them 'casings'. A casing is a non-nutritious layer placed over the top of the substrate. Mushrooms may fruit from the casing layer, but the energy comes from the substrate below, which we have no idea what that is other than it came from 19 jars. If you want larger fruits, you have to spawn to a bulk substrate such as manure or straw, then when that finishes colonization, you apply the casing layer. It's a misnomer to refer to the whole project as a 'casing'.

mushrooms are mostly water. approx 90%. you have so much moisture to go around... more pins means more mushrooms share in that amount of moisture... which means less size per mushroom. fewer pins, means more moisture thus more size per mushroom. its really about as simple as that. B+ can grow to be quite large when there's enough resources for them to do so. it makes sense that later flushes mean less pins that grow to larger sizes.

how thick is your substrate? those containers don't look very big, nor very deep. how thick is your casing layer? in addition to providing the microclimate necessary to encourage pin development, it also acts as a moisture resivoir. what casing mix are you using? different mixes hold different amounts of moisture.

to put it simply, a thicker substrate means more resources are available to the amount of pins that develop across the surface area of said substrate. a thicker casing layer (without going so thick that it doesn't properly colonize or hinders pinset) can help provide additional moisture. so moving up to bigger casing trays, with more substrate mass, will help substantially.

proper misting throughout the casing colonization stage, and then during cropping, keeps moisture levels up. proper misting means a fine mist, never forcefully applied, and given in small but frequent amounts. i see an awful lot of white on your surface, and "bare" mycelium at the surface isn't quite as receptive to moisture when compared to uncolonized casing. you might want to try initiating pinning sooner (that's where reading the pinning strategy comes in handy.)

Yeah. They are 1ft x 1ft containers each, each casing has 3 quarts grain and a top and bottom layer of 50/50+.

Just surprised that, for a 2nd time in a row, the first flush is identical in that they are real small and tiny. After dunking and going for flush 2 they will be big.

Like said earlier, at the point when the last casings were thrown out they were growing large fruits up to 3/4oz per casings per flush. These size casings do produce large yields for their size except the first flush is always very small fruits. Wondering why and how to counteract this phenomenon to get the good flushes from the first flush without waiting for subsequent flushes...

yep... grains alone simply dont hold much moisture, regardless how well you do everything else.  a bulk sub such as hpoo as mentioned, will.

its not surprising that if you do the same thing over again, you get the same results. :smile:

in absense of a bulk sub, you could consider mixing some moist verm in with the grains when you lay them out in a tray, to help provide some of that much needed moisture.  it will also be more receptive to dunking for later flushes.

Are those GT? I did a GT tub and it was Hpoo at about 3-4" in depth in a huge tub. They all came out really skinny with normal size caps. They looked really similar to yours. However the sheer number of them just about made up for there size. It was like a sea of lollipop shrooms.
