Ok well this is my first go my jars have been inside their home for 10 days now. And things are going pretty damn well, actually better then I expected. All execpt 2 jars (out of 12) show large growth, one of my jars is 75% done! The best part is no signs of contams either! However, Im a little worried though that I might be cooking my jars, due to methods of heat in my incubator. Strain - Thailand Koh Samui - Using - Rye Flour/Verm. for substrate in my cakes My Incubator setup - My incubator is my TV stand draw. Inside from bottom layer to top - 1st a large heating pad which is kept on its lowest setting, on top of that rests a thick towel to make sure direct heat doesnt hit the jars so they dont cook, on top of the towel are the jars, and on top of the jars is another thin layered towel to ensure darkness and also to keep heat in. Now my room temp. is around 70-75 F and its around 75-80 F inside my incubator at all times. Ok now ill get to the point my question is this do you think im cooking my jars dry by leaving my heating pad on all the time? I looked at my jars today and growth is going great after being in there for 10 days. But when i hold them to the light I can see on the sides little tiny drops/smears of moisture/water is this a good/bad/normal thing? (Note they werent large I had to hold the jars up to light to see them) Also my jars were warm, not hot but just warm to the touch Id imagine this is normal with the average temps needed in the incubator and plus due to my heating pad im using for my setup, should they be? Any advice/any help you could give would be great - Should I shut off my pad for a little while each day like bluehoney said in an earlier post and for how long, would 6 hours be sufficient, or do you recommend me doing anything else I was thinking about putting ice cubes in there to melt to create moisture I dont know if that would help at all just a thought, or should I do nothing at all and leave it as is? Everthing has been going very smoothly thus far and I just dont want to ruin it but if I did hey you live and learn. I love this hobby though already and wont ever give up if i fail. Again any help you can give would be great, this place is great, thanks

some moisture is fine, when the mycelium is feeding on the air the byproduct of this is co2 and a little condensation on the jar. a pool of water at the bottom of your jars would be a problem. as for the heat, id say 80 is a good temp for fast colonization, if your really worried you can get a timer to plug your blanket into to turn on and off when you want it too, but id say your temps are fine and everything is goin good from what you said. its good to ask tho, but im also a nOOb like you are, so take my advice for what its worth. good luck.

I think your set-up sounds fine to me. However if you are conserned about the moisture level, then you could always use amix of water/H2O2 in a spray bottle. I wouldn't go spraying the towels though, as this will leave water just sitting and waiting. On the other hand...if you have an fast evaporation rate then this might be ok. Like I said though, I think your doing fine. You seem to have enough moisture, considering your seeing growth and droplets in the jars. Be sure there are no puddles though. Now did you think about air xchange? Instead of turning your pad off(which indicated by your temp. guage is good)You might be better off taking the top towel off for a few hours a day. Good Luck!
