Does AC need air from outside?

Could you buy a window AC unit and just sit it in the middle of a room? Would that work or does it need hot air?

Yep. It has to be in the window. The part of the unit that sits outside gives off hot air.

No because AC's work on heat exchange. Basically a gas is compressed into the condenser (the part that sits outside) which warms it up, then the pressure is released in the evaporator which makes it cool. You have to get rid of the heat produced by compression by placing it outside. If you just sat the thing in the middle of the room, the heat given off will be absorbed by the cool air produced, resulting in a net zero heat exchange. In other words, you'd just be wasting electricity. Sit it in a window if you want it to cool things off.

Air conditioners don't just somehow cool things down.

What they do is they move heat from one place to another, in this case they absorb heat from the air they blow inside and exhaust it into the air they blow outside.

So if you have a window unit, it needs to be in a window to work right. Otherwise it's just a really expensive fan.

It's not hard to install one, but be sure to secure it right so the thing doesn't fall out of the window, and weatherstrip around it to help keep the cool air inside.

You can install the unit somewhere other than a window, as long as the exhaust air is blown into someplace where it will wind up outside the house. They can blow into an attic or garage, but wherever the exhaust goes needs to have good ventilation. I.E. if it blows into the attic you need an electric attic fan to keep the attic ventilated. Attics are normally well over 110 degrees in the summertime, and the hotter the external side of an AC unit is the less efficient an AC unit gets.

Whether or not you could make it work in the middle of the room is not the big issue:

Carbon Monoxide is.

MANY models of window-mounted ACs (especially the older models) produce carbon monoxide as a byproduct of operation. If you don't allow them to vent outside you could easily build up CO in the room and hurt yourself.

Unless the AC is designed not to be window-mounted, don't try running it elsewhere.

How does an AC machine produce carbon monoxide?? :wtf:

There's no combustion occuring anywhere in the machine...


Being an electrical appliance, it will produce some ozone...but CO? I don't think so...

thats what i thought... wheres it get the C and the O? To put it bluntly anyways. Combustion engines get it out of the fuel and oxygen used to burn it...

Electrical engines don't...

That would then be equivocal of my computer, TV, aquarium filter and industrial sized orgasmotron producing CO.... They don't, at least that i know of!

Hahaha! CO?! WTF?! Yeah an air conditioner will work just fine being totally inside and it will blow cold air out one end but it will blow hot air out the other end. Basically, if it consumes 1000 watts of electricity, it will heat up the room as fast as a 1000 watt space heater. If you want something that will cool a room without a vent get an evaporative cooler or "swamp cooler". They work to a point but raise humidity a lot. They work by blowing air over a mesh of wet material. The evaporating water cools the air. Also note these only work in dry climates. The higher the relative humidity, the less effective they become.

Not only is it a hermetically sealed system, which doesn't produce Ozone (unless it develops a leak), but it's also incapable of producing CO unless it catches on fire.

Please do some research before making ignorant statements.

TM, all electrical devices produce ozone to some extent during use...and all of the electrical components inside an AC unit aren't sealed - just the compressor unit is sealed. There's still the blower fan motors which will be producing a small amount of ozone - nothing to be worried about, of course.

If your AC unit gets a leak, it won't produce any extra ozone...it'll just start to spill all that precious Freon out into the atmosphere where it'll damage the ozone :wink:
