off the grid electricity question

If I move out to the middle of nowhere where their is no electricity, how much would installing things such as solar equipment or wind power run me?

what would one do about the water situation? rain drums?

Unfortunately, I don't have enough information to fully answer your questions.

What I do know is that the initial costs to get yourself up and running can cost a small fortune. In the long run, it eventually evens out with the money you would be save on electricity etc.

i was looking after I asked this on google and right now it says it's like 60 grand for an average home, but that companies are working on all new shit and the writer theorized that eventually it would probably run 10k a house- if this is the case, I'll do this to my home when it gets that cheap.

there's a great deal to consider starting with the lay of the
land, the wind zones, geographical location, etc... if you have a
stream that cna be dammed then you have a 3rd option that works
out even better, water turbines

so what's the voltage range you're looking for, you can go
anywhere from 12 volts up to 460v 3phase from wind and water

you've a couple of years of reading to do before you make a final decision

I have been checking into this quite alot and it seems like about 10 to 18 thousand dollars to be able to enjoy power like you do in any other house or apartment.....you could start with a 6 to 8 thousand dollars system if you wanted to be uber conservative and then step up later hwen you had more money.

Wind seems to be more exspensive than solar ,but has the ability to generate far more power over the long run ,because wind also blows at night.......then again ,my figures are based off of Kansas ,where the wind blows almost all the time at a good speed for generation...some places would never work well for wind power.


You have to do alot of reading to get a idea of what will work for your lifestyle and location........A good place to start is how many KH...kilowatt hours you use a month ,just look at the power bill and it will have that number....then look at solar systems that will generate those numbers based on a 5 hour a day generation duration.


A entry level exspandable system will do a refridgerator and a few lights for about 3 to 4 thousand dollars.

With the current 30 percent federal tax break and the price of electricity......the break even point is about 7 to 12 years depending on how much you pay per kilowatt hour to the power company......so basically you are paying up front for 7 to 12 years or power to do this and then you get a free ride or a greatly reduced ride due to maintaining the system....,batteries , panels that go bad or get busted.


To fire up 2 to 3 thousand square foot house full time with ac,dishwashers,clothes washers ,telivision, computers,garage door openers,lots of lights,garage tools etc,sprinkler system etc ....your looking at about 25 to 40 thousand dollars ..it all depends on how efficient your appliances are and how conservative you want to get.


Like Pris said you need to do alot of reading or just have the cash to have someone do all the ground work for you and tell you what you need....which will probably relate to how much money the person that you hires needs at the time....it`s best to educate yourself and know what you need and be able to do most of the work yourself to get a cheaper deal.

I am not even going to get into wind power ,thats a different animal all together and needs totally different considerations.I will tell that a large part of the exspence in wind power is the towers that the turbins sit on top of.

I figured about 8 thousand for a small system if I did all the work for a 16 by 24 room with lights,computer ,heating cooling and hot water and even then I would have to be super conservative on power usage,keep in mind this would have been a sleeping room with a bathroom.....no kitchen no nothing else at all.

Satelite....or microwave in some places ,but thats more power you need to use.

well this is all just theoretical, I'm a broke ass college student, won't have my own house probably until my late 20's. Hopefully it's all cheaper by then too.

look into water turbines and property with water, there's a multitude of reasons that's desirable

First step is cutting down your usage.

Second step is taking advantage of ALL government rebates for green energy if applicable.

Beyond that, I'm looking at setting up my off-the grid electricity for around $25,000 AUD (could be as little as $10-$15k with rebates), that should provide me 3000-4000kwh a year, enough for 1 person to survive while being very energy conscious.

Fuck yeah! That sounds insane.

All the ready to go turbines around here are like 1kw for $3500 AUD.

it's really not that difficult to build if you're willing to
dedicate a little time to learning things that will help you in
building it as well as give you a set of skills for the future

it's not hard to look up loads of plans and info online and
develop your own from there, a savonious rotor (VAWT) is great
for a range of areas and can produce in areas with low wind, for
some areas, batteries are a must

There ya go...hell ya, just building the pole will save almost half of the cost and making the turbin yourself is a bonus....post some pics when you get going on it !!!!
