Chemistry/Carbon Monoxide Poisoning Question.
    #5200528 -

Hey All,

I have a quick question:

I'm concerned about Carbon Monoxide poisoning. I'm thinking, if I were to smoke a average sized bud of weed in a small, homemade lightbulb vaporizor, how many PPM (Parts per million) of Carbon Monoxide do you think could be in the lightbulb. I dont know personally, and this sounds as though this question could be very difficult to answer. I'm trying to find out if inhaling the smoke from the inside of this lightbulb would be enough to cause neurological damage via the CO molecule.

Any help is VERY MUCH appreciated.

Peace.

If the weed doesn't burn (that's the whole idea of a vap), then no CO is evolved.

And even if it does burn, you wouldn't get any more CO than you would from a bong or a blunt

Yeah, thanks guys.

I'm talking about a sit-e-ation where you heated the bulb too much and the weed itself burned. I'm wondering if this could cause a toxic level of CO, especially in a small light bulb. See, I'm thinking that it may be different than a bong or a blunt, because there is not enough oxygen in the area filling with smoke, to allow for a safe inhale. A bong for example has plenty of room in its internal compartment. What about a small light bulb?

No matter the volume of oxygen in the container, it is still the amount of fuel (in this case weed) that is burned that determines the CO levels inside said container. You'll get no more CO from a light bulb sized container than you would from a basketball sized container given the same ammount of substance burned.

In terms of parts per million the concentration would be higher, yes, but clearing the bulb in one toke brings the same amount of CO into your lungs as clearing the bong in one toke.

Doesn't matter, man.

Didn't you ask this same question a few months ago?

Or was that someone else?

You certainly aren't going to get any more CO using a lightbulb to smoke weed than you would smoking weed out of a pipe/bong/joint.

It takes significant exposure to CO to cause neurological damage, something you are never going to see from smoking weed.

Well, in a vaporizer you use very small amounts of herb. I sincerely doubt that even if you somehow caused an efficient CO producing reaction that the amount of fuel present is enough to create toxic levels. CO can build up over time, but only in the short term. The body will purge itself of it (well, for the most part. There are of course ambient atmospheric levels of it) in a reasonably small amount of time. The only way to do damage with it is to build up a toxic level of it within a certain timeframe.

For more details on this topic, see Carbon monoxide poisoning.

Carbon monoxide is very dangerous, as inhaling excessively high amounts of it will lead to hypoxic injury, neurological damage, and possibly death. A concentration of as little as 0.04% (400 parts per million) carbon monoxide in the air can be fatal. The gas is especially dangerous because it is not easily detected by human senses. Early symptoms of carbon monoxide poisoning include drowsiness and headache, followed by unconsciousness, respiratory failure, and death. First aid for a victim of carbon monoxide poisoning requires access to fresh air; administration of artificial respiration and, if available, oxygen; and, as soon as possible, expert medical attention. When carbon monoxide is inhaled, it reacts with hemoglobin, the red blood pigment that normally carries oxygen to all parts of the body. Because carbon monoxide is attracted to the hemoglobin about 210 times as strongly as is oxygen, it takes the place of oxygen in the blood, causing oxygen starvation throughout the body. Carbon monoxide detectors for homes are now readily available.

The effects of carbon monoxide in parts per million are listed below:

100 ppm (0.01%) Slight headache in two to three hours
200 ppm (0.02%) Slight headache within two to three hours
400 ppm (0.04%) Frontal headache within one to two hours
800 ppm (0.08%) Dizziness, nausea, and convulsions within 45 minutes. Insensible within two hours.
1,600 ppm (0.16%) Headache, dizziness, and nausea within 20 minutes. Death in less than two hours.
3,200 ppm (0.32%) Headache, dizziness and nausea in five to ten minutes. Death within 30 minutes.
6,400 ppm (0.64%) Headache and dizziness in one to two minutes. Death in less than 20 minutes.
12,800 ppm (1.28%) Death in less than three minutes.

That sounds scary, but keep in mind that whatever ppm of CO is in your little lightbulb it is not in a large quantity. The ppm toxicity levels shown are stated with the assumption that a room full of air is at that concentration.

If I had to estimate, I'd compare hitting your lightbulb as having the same amount of carbon monoxide exposure as being hit in the face by some windswept diesel exhaust.

Nothing's changed about CO since then
