How is this possible AFTER the trading deadline.

Obviously, I dont understand something...

Doesnt he have to clear waivers? How is this possible, Boston has to be at the bottom of the list...

yea... after july 31 you have to clear waivers to trade someone

before that you dont..so the term "deadline" is kinda a joke, just like a lot of the rules they have governing baseball

The deadline is not a joke at all. The waiver rule is somewhat complicated but in essence here's what happens. A team puts a player on waivers. If nobody claims him he can be traded. He has cleared waivers and can be traded to any team (unless the player has no trade rights in his contract but this is irrelevant, they never could trade him without his consent anyway). If one team claims him they get him for nothing. Or the team can pull him back and negotiate a deal. If more than one team claims him the team with the lower record gets him for nothing. Unless, and this is huge, the team that put him on waivers pulls him back, and they usually do. Then he has not cleared waivers and they can't trade him to anybody until the off-season. Unless he clears waivers later. They can just let him go but they can't trade him. I believe the Red Sox did this with Manny not too long ago because of his huge contract. Nobody claimed him. Sometimes a team tries to block a team ahead of them in the standings by claiming a player. Sometimes they get burned when the original team doesn't pull the player back. That's how the Yankees ended up with Canseco a few years back.
Calling this a deadline is not nonsense at all. It changes the whole trade dynamic.

And yeah, the now officially Dead Sox got Javy Lopez. He is so far done that the Orioles were paying Ramon Hernandez huge money and put Javy at DH, where he has amassed an incredibly impressive 30/8/31/.265. With occasional, weak backup catcher appearances.
That is almost an official surrender.
