MLB Trading Deadline
    #5878458 - 07/19/06 05:10 PM (17 years, 6 months ago)

Anyone hoping their team will pick someone up? Hoping your team will drop someone?

As a Cubs fan, I'd like to see Maddux get traded to a contender. The Dodgers maybe, or the Mets, but I doubt the Mets thing will happen. I'd like to see the Cubs drop quite a few players, actually. Hopefully JP will be gone too, even though he apparnetly has remembered how to hit in the last few weeks too. I wouldnt mind Jacky Jones gone either, but I dont know who would take him, as he's a confounding person to try to fit in a line-up.

Other than that...I hope the Yankees dont pick up Soriano. I hate the Yanks so much, and he's a HOT bat. Dont know if he'd go for a trade where he's in the outfield anyway...

I think Soriano is a hotter commodity than Abreu. Bobby's having an off year, but I think if a club could pick him up and get him agreed to an extension, it would be a good move.

I wish washington would trade soriano to a different team. He's out of place their and they've got him first in the line up. Seems to me he'd be better at cleanup, but who knows? I could be mistaken.

Cowgold is more correct about Soriano's value than that idiot manager he's currently working under.

That said, as a Yankee fan, I give nothing up for him. High contract, not signed beyond this year, playing out of position, or in position but not one the Yankees need. They need a right fielder, not a shitty left fielder. Not with a basicly free Cabrera, who has held the fort down pretty nicely. And don't forget, Matsui has a few years left on his deal, Sheffield, none. He's gone.
And then here's the biggest upside of all this, for the Yanks. Even with all this shit, Sheffield, Matsui, Pavano, Dotel, Cano, they are just behind the Sox. Their role players and rookies have gotten enormous experience, tempering, confidence and exposure. Matsui, Sheffield, Cano, Pavano and Dotel are all due back in August. Name one other team that can make that kind of addition in August. Or even 40% of it. I do not look to see the Yanks make much of any kind of deal unless it includes a young right fielder with potential

Oh, I forgot, my bet is that Abreu's career arc is in a serious and terminal downturn that wouldn't justify a quarter of his salary, that he has a no trade and that he will expect some kind of extension to approve. Let's not forget that the Yanks only pay 60% of A Rod's salary. They ain't stupid anymore

Although you are correct in the sense that if you can catch a fly ball you can catch a fly ball, Right field puts a premium on having a good throwing arm as the throw from RF to 3rd base is much longer and you want to minimize the 1st to 3rd activity on singles. Also, in Yankee stadium, where the Yankees play by the way, there is a tremendous amount of real estate in left and not so much in right, by a long shot. LF favors speed. RF favors canon arm. And there's a reason regular players don't switch much between the two. They are each specialties.

well we jus dumped hillenbrand cuz apparently he was a big prick in teh clubhouse which is a shame. Wouldnt mind whatsoever to see the jays pick up another big name starter. if we had our rotation going all season i honestly think we'd be in first.

Fuck, if josh towers had won HALF his starts we'd be in first

yea.. slightly. guys dont switch much cause they get used to reading the ball off the bat from a certain angle more than anything. and at unique parks (such as wrigley, which is probably the hardest rf to play in all of baseball) you want someone who knows all the unique characteristics and karims the ball will take...

while it is well known that right fielders should have good throwing arms... very few outfielders in the game today have good arms.. nor do they even work on their throwing much.. its been widely recognized ... especially in the AL .. if they got a piece of wood in their hands and know how to use it... theyll find them a place

ive played baseball for over half my life in leagues. and i still play occasionally.. ive played every position, and more than any other 2 positions.. LF and RF can be interchangable.... thats not to say they're not different and unique.. its just much less so than changing positons in the IF

i dont follow the yanks at all... but fom what i saw when you guys whoped the sox. id agree with you that you dont even need soriano right now

I would like the tigers get soriano or maddux. Maddux would get a big aid in his numbers this year as the tigers are much better than the cubs and soranio would give us a 30-30 guy that could drive some runs in. Put him at dh.

I think the Tigers will either pick up Soriano or Abreau. I'd rather have Soriano, personally.

But, on the other hand, to get Soriano, I think they'd have to give up someone big...Verlander maybe. And I dont know if that really makes them a better team.

The Jays got a middle reliever from the Giants in exchange for Hillenbrand i think, he pitched last night against the Skanks :yesnod: They should be in good shape when Chiacin and Rios come back from the DL

Maddux has said in the past that he doesn't wanna pitch in hte american league, a contributing factor back in '93 or so when he went to the braves instead of the yankees.

theres been a lot of talk here in atlanta about trading our replacement third baseman, Wilson Betemit. he just came up last year, and he fills chipper's shoes nicely. he's been making spectacular plays at third, and has had some big time clutch hits.

its been said we might deal him to the yankees for scott proctor. i know we need all the bullpen help we can get, but im not sure about this. we just picked up bob wickman for our closer spot, and it looks like he's gonna get the job done.

anyone have any thoughts on proctor? if betemit goes, it'll be another young player the yankees snatch from the braves. the yankees always get our star players, and he'll be another one you can thank the atlanta farm system for.

I would not give you Proctor for Betemit. We need Proctor much more than a back-up corner infielder.
