Abnormal Purto Ricans
    #586579 - 03/22/02 05:13 PM (22 years, 12 days ago)

My friend has grown some Purto Ricans and she has noticed a trend. They grew to about 5 inches and then the stems become extremly engorged with water causeing the stems to become as thick as 3 inches and they become wrinkled as well but the caps open to form wavy caps. The humidity is set to 60% 12 hours then 100% at night, with temps at 65 at night, 70 during the day with good airflow. Light is available 12 hours a day and is natural. The substrate was birdseed and BRF and was used to innoculate pasturized wheat straw, then cased with 1 1/2 inches of peat/lime mixture. The 1st and second flush are consistent in results. Any ideas? :smile:bluhoney

PR's are very diverse. it has been observed that one particular isolate has formed "fatass" type fruits in large clusters with good air exchange. One pin is the size of a button mushroom, and has the same consistency in terms of density! Other isolates pin out of control, and if there is not enough colonized substrate and the conditions fluctuate out of the optimal, massive aborting can occur. I don't know about the wrinkly effect, nor do I know about the watery effect, unless you're talking aboutcakes... which you aren't. Amazonian fruit bodies near the base of the cake on oversaturated perlite tend to do what you're talking about...it seems to be an environmental thing. has your friend noticed that it takes about 10-13 days to fully develop from pin to veil tear?

Yes, she has noticed it takes an extremly long time from pin to veil break on average (8+ days). Using your example of the cakes on perlite.;. Then could it be assumed the substrate layer itself has become too moist?Also the pins do enlarge to the size of a small thumb as well. Since the humidity falls within a safe range, it possibly may just be in the casing? :smile:bluhoney

Yes, the 2nd picture especially. The one you have pointed at looks like all my friends except hers are very wrinkly as well.:)bluhoney

that looks more like genetics than environmental. Ironically, the growth I've seen is opposite to what you have seen: the base of the stems are fat like PF classics. I have not noticed that the second flushes produce skinnier fruit bodies; they're about the same as the first flush.
MYCOTEK: is your print from workman, or was it grown out and then you grew a print from that? That is, assuming workman's print is F-1(first generation print taken from the wild and grown out), is your print an F-3? I've noticed GIGANTIC differences between different isolates from the F-2 prints that workman offers. Off the same print, I isolated strains that pinned like crazy, but produced skinny fruit scattered throughout the casing, while another isolate forms beautiful clusters with squat, dense stems and proportional caps. How long did those cakes take to fruit?

Here are some pics that will help explain whats going on;
The first is the pinn set which looks normal.

Then they start to grow normally but increase in stem thickness then the unusuallness starts. The caps start to shrival, the stems may discolor a little and so on.

Then this is what ends up left over:

But in another tray along with the mutated ones are ones that seem to be forming nicely like this one:

Does any one have any suggestions?:)bluhoney

Hmmm...

Stamets says in GGMM that the research shows exactly the opposite, namely that the stronger strain dominates and uses the network of the weaker strains to gain more nutrients and space.
