Puerto Ricans' sensibility to ph.
    #1097950 - 11/30/02 08:27 AM (14 years, 9 months ago)

I tried to fruit PRs from cased birdseed and 50/50 birdseed/rye with the following casing layer: 10 cups peat / 10 cups verm / a bit less than a cup of gardening lime.

Here's what it gave: ABORTS, Tons!!! That's second flush, recased. The first one gave more aborts; the casing layer was 100% covered with aborts, when picking an abort, I could discover another layer of aborts below. All of them stained strangely GREEN, not blue:

Then, I tried to mix two colonized quart jars of PRs and Mazas. The PRs appeared first and all aborted. I wasn't expecting much from that casing when a few days later, some more delicate shrooms appeared: Mazas surfaced and this is what it gave (you can see PR aborts; plenty of them have already been harvested):

From that experience I thought that Mazas were probably less sensitive to the lime (basic ph) than Mazas. Therefore I tried the same PRs (all of the casings came from the same spore print; I transfered grain from jar to jar!) with a neutral casing layer: 50/50 verm/coco-choir, and here's the beautiful result:

I heard many people had problems to successfully fuit PRs. I just wanted to tell my conclusion that might be helpful for those who use anything to basify their casing layer (lime or shell, whatever).

PRs are perhaps more sensitive to Ph than other strains. From my experience, I'll be using only coco-choir for PRs from now on, even though coco-choir gets overlayed more heavily (or quickly) than peat.

Good luck with that beautiful strain,
LilMerlin.

i also like coir. do you think it helps to add a little verm to the coir for overlay prevention and moisture regulation? i think it's good, but I frickin hate verm.

I am wondering if the gardening lime is Dolomitic lime, e.g., contains magnesium. Magnesium will certainly inhibit fruiting of any mushroom.

rhizo,

adding verm to choir doesn't prevent overlay at all !!! It simply keeps more water in the casing layer... nothing more. And quite frankly, it doesn't make a big difference whether you put more, less, or not at all, depending on how you water your casing layer before mycelium shows up.

LilMerlin.

Whether my lime has magnesium or not, I'm not sure. But it didn't prevent my Mazatapecs from growing, which means that Puertos are more delicate than Mazas.

You used just a little too much lime.
I used Ryche Hawks 50-50+ and had great success with PR's(15 cups peat/15 cups verm--1.2 cups hydrated lime)

Definately an instructive post.  A question I had is did you just try the PR's with 50/50 peat/verm or was the verm/coir mix the only one new one you used?
I like the last PR casing though.

All the casings are from the same print (grain has been transfered):

The first pic is verm/peat/lime. (PR failure)
The second is the same as first. (PR failure; Maza success)
The third is verm/coir (PR success)

Not sure I have understood the question,
LilMerlin.

sorry.. I meant to ask if you had tried the PRs with just a peat/verm mix with no lime or just straight peat.
