mycelial abnormality?
    #1137969 - 12/13/02 10:00 AM (13 years, 11 months ago)

my pet gila monsters have some multispore GT plates and Huatla going currently. The strange thing is that all of the GT's have odd zones of a off-white/almost caramel coloring in several places that is, seemingly, part of the mycelium and not contamination. I told the Gila's that I had not seen that type of discoloration in Ps. cubensis agar cultures before. (At least not this early in development).
My question:
Has anyone else observed this type of color variance with the GT strain in particular? The Huatla and B+ that are growing concurrently have no such color patches and all were done on the same day and are incubating in the same conditions. I will try and post pics if I can.

I'am also currently growing Golden Teachers and Huautla. I'am also having the same problem with my gt's. The mycelium is extremely cottony and has the same discolorations as you mentioned. I'am also having problems getting the gt's to fruit.

I heard of a girl that had the same problem with her GT casings. She's also perplexed. Anyone have a pic so people can compare notes?

No, but it sounds like the same problem. Alkaloid: I don't like to bring
vendors into this but are your spores from Sporeworks by chance. I'm just wondering if the batch of prints/syringes were contaminated or if it's a strain related problem??

the spores are from Sporeworks. As the gila's are still in the agar phase I couldn't say anything about the growth characteristics, but it appears healthy other than having this rather pronounced discoloration. Even on the 1st plate I am already observing rhizomorphic growth. Once the gila's get to fruiting phase I will report back on the progress and see if there might be some type of problem with the strain itself.

the spores are from "the spore chicks" but it took about 9 months to get them, so they probably grew a batch off of spores from sporeworks, then sent me prints of those. Sneaky hoes.

so You had the same type of discoloration, except it was on the casing layer? And it was not a type of contaminant? The plates are being transferred to peroxidated MEA plates today, but I will keep track and report any gross abnormalities, if they occur.

Ya keep us updated. I also e-mailed sporeworks for some insight on what the problem might be. I'm having alot of trouble getting it to fruit.

I have had this same discoloration with H202 MEA but with Pan.Cyans from a wild spore print.. doesnt appear to be contamination... perhaps it is caramalisation ??

I would guess this is normal as the mycelium of some strains will produce light brown waste products. Got a picture?
It's definately NOT caremelization which is a chemical process that affects sugars.
Good guess though.
