Maybe I'm way off on this but if your substrate is WBS+verm ...where do you suppose the shrooms will get nutrients from?
Someone, correct me if I'm wrong...

When I was new here I asked if I could fruit straight WBS and the (pretty much) unanimous opinion was that I'd see shrooms but they'd be weak.
The only grain you can fruit directly off of, IIRC, is quinoa.

Splif, you're actually wrong on a couple different levels... You can fruit directly from RYE.
Also, you can case wbs and do just fine... I have a casing going right now... straight wbs cased with 50/50. here's a pin picture:

And I accidently hit one of the bigger ones with my finger while I was taking that picture and it's now got a nice blue circle on it... I obviously havent eaten them yet, but if the bruising indicates any sort of potency, then I'd say it's just as potent as any brf I've used.
You can fruit a rye CAKE, you can fruit a quinoa CAKE, you can fruit a brown rice CAKE.
But he basically said he stuck his spawn in a flowerpot... hellloooooo, potting soil is a yummy nutritious substrate, as well as a decent casing layer :P
*whap* *whap* pwnt.

Cased rye works just fine and produces excellent results.

Hmmm. Ok. Maybe I'm wrong on that one. I haven't tried rye and I don't generally read posts about it (for the same reason).
"Also, you can case wbs and do just fine... I have a casing going right now..."
Jeeze. I don't know, I've seen vet after vet say that fruiting WBS directly produces weak shrooms. I just might try it myself -- I've got a run of jars going as I type.
Nudge me in a month or so if you haven't heard back from me. I have a notoriously bad memory. I'll remember to DO it, I'll just forget who I'm supposed to report back to. =)

I have fruited off of straight WBS a couple times. The problem with it is moisture content. WBS has plenty of good nutrition but it doesn't hold water well at all. Shrooms grow smaller then they should, also have a problem re-hydrating while dunking. If you plan on using WBS as a substrate, I suggest mixing a good amount of chunky vermiculite with it and perhaps even some coir.
