Any Linus/Unix users here?

I'm looking to learn Linux, but I'm not entirely sure where to begin. Anyone have any recommendations of good books for people just starting to learn? Or which Linux would be the best choice, etc. Any help would be appreciated - thanks

I'd suggest Debian. Their apt-get is the shiz but I understand package management has come a long way so perhaps others have caught up. I hear good things about gentoo.
I'd avoid Red Hat because they tend to fuck up the directory structure, put things in odd places. Would make porting scripts in and out a real bitch. But again, it's been a while so maybe they changed.
As far as books go, anything O'Reilly puts out is decent.

Fedora is the most commonly used distribution and the companies that are really serious about Linux use Red Hat Enterprise Linux which is based upon Fedora.
I'm coming from the perspective of someone who's gotten paid to work on Linux full time for seven years. If you're strictly a hobbyist, I'd suggest Fedora. Did I mention I hate Debian?

The hot choice right now is Ubuntu...
I had problems with red hat not recognizing my wifi card out of the box, whereas ubuntu recognized all of my hardware no prob. EDIT: red hat requires (last I checked) the equivelent of 3-4 CDs worth of stuff to get it to work. Ubuntu - 1 CD sized DL.
Ubuntu is a great starting place IMO. It is windows/mac-like interface will at least help with the transition.
Still, after you are done installing, do run the update manager to err on the side of caution - advice no matter the OS.
So, updating to play DVDs (they may have codecs out of the box, can't remember), MP3s, Browser plug-ins you may be used to (if you use IE) like Flash, etc *USED* to be a royal pain in the ass. With Ubuntu (and some other Linux OSes) you can download/use a package manager that takes care of "dependencies" -- other files and binaries that are needed to make other packages run. So here, follow this guy's guide, and you will be "good to go, mon"
http://easylinux.info/wiki/Ubuntu
Unix, BTW (you may know) runs on specialized HW, wheras Linux at a fundamental level (at least) runs on Intel/AMD x86 systems. Point being Linux will typically run on the same box most members have: a windows box.
This is getting windy, but I may be wrong at this point in time about Unix and Intel seeing as how Macs run on Intels and are essentially Unix-based. -ghost
PM me if you have other questions. I will help where I can.
EDIT: splifner180 has the name I couldn't remember: apt-get. It *is* the shiat, and a huge help to newbs and vets. I think apt-get will be seen as a catalyst that jump-starts the Linux OS usage rate.

Oh no.
Well this is coming from a person who has had responsibility for over 10,000 *nix machines at once, written scripts and APIs in a laundry list of shells and programs and taught this stuff to other engineers.
They say a carpenter looks at all problems like they're nails. If you want to be most familiar with the distro that you're most likely to encounter, sure, go with RH. I'd even strongly recommend it as a second choice. But the bottom line is RH tends to do things out of sync with linux norms and practices.
Look, I'm not saying I'm sure I'm right. I'm saying "ask more people."
Having said that, I'm bowing out of this thread. I hate which-*nix-is-best threads. Nobody ever convinces anyone of anything. =)

For those of you who want to dabble in Linux but dont want to make the committment of making your machine dual boot. (And fucking it up as I have in the past) Or dont want to have a Linux only machine - get a copy of Knoppix. http://www.knopper.net/knoppix/index-en.html
Knoppix is a CD or DVD based operating system. (And did I mention that its FREE?)
All you do is pop in the disk and reboot your computer. The entire OS is run from the CD/DVD. It is a truly amazing OS and a great way to wet your feet to the world of Linux without being committed to it. -Me
Also www.knoppix.net is an invaulable resource to help you with learning the OS as well. -Me

I use ubuntu linux and arch linux. I recommend ubuntu for the new user. I also recommend the latest fedora. the best way to learn linux (or at least how I did) is the same with how to learn mush cult: forums. I really enjoy the ubuntu forums: http://www.ubuntuforums.org - very populated.
good luck. let me know if you need any help.

Gentoo.
Learn it Right the FIRST TIME so you dont get fucked by Redhats 'easymode' and take an extra 3 years of looking like a linux idiot in the field.
6 Months of gentoo you will learn more about how linux really works and how to troubleshoot problems then a few years of redhat.

I also love my gentoo, but I don't usually recommend it to newbies. With gentoo, you'll end up with the most robust system, but you'll have to work to get it that way. Room4Shroom, if you're serious in saying you want to learn linux, as opposed to just using it, gentoo might be good for you.
Otherwise, Ubuntu is a good choice, as is Mepis, which is a very similar distro. LiveCDs are always fun, Knoppix and Kanotix are the most full-featured of those. I'd suggest you avoid anything with RPM package management. That includes Red Hat/Fedora, Mandriva, and SUSE.
www.distrowatch.com is your friend.

This can easily turn into a "what is your favorite strain" type debate. I guess everyone has their opinions
http://distrowatch.com/ has some stats (not sure of how they are compiled) of popular distros on the right hand side of the page, about 1/2 way down. Popularity doesn't equate to anything necessarily, but if you are thinking in terms of adoption rates, one may want to consider a distro with a large user-base.
