Why I feel sad

I feel the soul of the west is dying. In the forties and fifties people had overwhelming belief in science, that it had the power to transform the world into a balanced, fair, enjoyable and sustainable existence. In the sixties they believed a cultural revolution was just round the corner, that we were on the brink of a better world. From 70s till now, we're bacially realising that it could be tough to survive the next 100 years.
Maybe the rise of China will save humanity's soul...certainly their culture prizes quiet dignity more than our loud celebrity-obssessed society does....certainly culturally there's only so far the west has to sink.

well the Chinese do have good food.
You are underestimating technology. we are engaging in telepathy right now..... isn't that something interesting or hopeful?

Telepathy and science have little to do with the soul IMO...although breakthroughs and evolution in the mind may release new and inspired creativity. I was talking shorter term though than some full scale evolution.

I agree they have nothing to do with the soul. it is a form of revolution though, an ever growing culmination of knowledge and opinons.

I often fall into this kind of thinking:
ahh the good old xx's, people were different. Then I remember a really negative point of that time, then I reconsider and say, aahh the good old yy's, now that was some good time.. then I remember some negative stuff that was going on back then.
they I think, maybe I'm thinking the wrong century, then I remember all the shit that was happening prior to 20th century. Then I think, ok , maybe past isn't so romantic as it seems, maybe now is the best time to be alive. Then I turn on the TV, and reconsider that
In the end I realise, there is no great time, nothing ever changes. The quantity of shit is always the same, it's just that we constantly trade one shit for another.
There was a time when people were good enough to accept a wandering stranger into their homes, but in that same others would use black people as slaves
Today people are more open to people who are different, but are shopping freaks, cold, heartless robots, and only believe in survival and darvinism, out of spiritual laziness.
In the future that might change, but just to keep the level of shit constant, we might become obsessed with people who like wearing pant holders, and stone them to death on street.

Our manifest destiny has manifested, it would seem. Fascination it once held has faded, as what was just over the horizon is now seen as mundane.

We are not living on the verge of an Edenic paradise, and it is very clear that human activity is making the biosphere less habitable, both for our own species and the many plants and animals we rely on.

That's true, we're living IN one. It's just people are too greedy and selfish on both individual and collective levels to realize. Ghandi once said "The earth has enough for everyone's need, but not for everyone's greed."

the soul of the west is dying....
i had a conversation about this exact issue with a friend the other day, we were walking by some street performers playing guitars etc. and there were a handful of poeple dancing. my friend commented on the way that our western culture views practices such as dance and music as a commercial creation. take places such as south america, which is in the west i know, or africa, or korea. now ive never been there, but they celebrate the drums beat, its is not customary to be ashamed to get up and dance or sing when you feel da rhythm... but on the streets of toronto there were 4 poeple who were "courageous" enough to dance. just interesting to think that our culture may actualy view music (as an example) differntly from the rest of the world, that the soul of the west may really be dying, good post. peace

Do the chinese have a message board like this to speak on?
Quote:
mr_kite said: certainly their culture prizes quiet dignity more than our loud celebrity-obssessed society does
I talk with a german grad student at school frequently, and many of our conversations have these generalizations thrown in. He likes to identify with a culture, yet I can't base my individuality on what culture I was born into.
