hey cream corn.. i don't get why u have the sides covered in tape. i mean it's a good thing that light hits the sides of the cakes and it pins right? let me know man i'm making one today

I have heard that you can keep the same perlite going forever. All you have to do is spray it with some h202 with your water. Every few months when you feel it is dirty or has had a contam you can put your perlite in the oven for a while (I know theres Tek somewhere that goes into more detail) wet it down and put it back it.

to the posts above...

plenty of light hits the sides of the cakes.  i just wanted the light to be most intense from above so there's no question which way is "up"... since the back side of my tape is white it probably reflects more light than anything so its probably not doing me any good either way :smile:  since my light source is so close to the lid of my FC anyway, the light is intense from above regardless.  you can certainly skip it.  its an idea to try if you end up with mushrooms growing sideways/upside down or grow as "fatasses" (thick stumpy stems and not very tall).  if i were to do it again i wouldn't bother with it myself.

and sure you can re-use perlite all you want.  buuut... perlite works because it has tons of tiny microscopic holes/pores in it.  well spores are tiny microscopic things.  once it gets covered in spores like that it gets "clogged" and doesn't make humidity very well anymore.  so its not a matter of cleanliness, its more a matter of is the perlite doing its job.  sure you can spend all sorts of time trying to wash it out, rinse it, bake it, whatever... but at $2.50 a bag i just chuck it and use new perlite.  my time is more valuable than perlite. :smile:  baking it supposedly sterilizes it, but it doesn't need to be sterile in the first place, and contams can't really grow in it so i've never bothered sterilizing it... i feel that's overkill and just an extra unnecessary step.  i keep it simple and haven't had problems as a result.

you can also use H2O2 if you like, it gives you a little contam protection... but the emphasis is on little.  it breaks down quickly so unless you're constantly spraying it you're really not benefitting any from it, and since the point of the FC is to be low maintenence and me not to have to contstantly spray it, its kind of useless IMO.  i use H2O2 in my spray bottle for when i mist casings (the casings are in a different FC obviously...) because i'm more concerned about that bit of contam protection on casing surfaces where contams can possibly grow, and casings get misted more often so i feel its useful there... again since perlite doesn't really harbor contams in the first place  i don't bother there.

Hey creamcorn the airpump you have in your tank, did you but bubblers at the bottom of the perlite or did you just put the hose above the perlite and just let it pump fresh air through out the cakes?

ok so you have a bubble stone, im going to use my bubble wands i have already in my tub, and you just soak the perlite until it wont hold anymore water right? But there should be NO standing water in the tank right? Just about 3 to 4 inches of perlite and the bubble wands underneath with holes in the tub for proper ventilation and you put polyfil in the holes to keep contams out right? Im going to switch to perlite here in a few minutes and i want to know how to "prep" my perlite if any prepping is needed, I got a bag that is "4 square feet" which is all it says for $24.99 its a LOT of perlite but i figured i will need extra eventually, Thanks Creamcorn!
