terrarium question
    #458039 -

I posted this before but for some reason it doesnt appear to have showed up so I will write it again.

I would like to use a terrarium to grow my mushrooms for incubation but dont have an aquarium and the nearest place to get one is an hour away so I was wondering if I could use this large plastic container I have that was once used for storing things. It is basicaly just a big piece of plastic (water tight) and I was planning on covering the top with saran wrap and using particle board for the inside for the humidifacation as described in the PF Tek method.

Thanks, any and all help is greatly apprechiated. LSD Pirate.

You can use your plastic container. I would try to find a different lid because you are going to have to fan your terrarium unless you pump fresh air into it. I haven' t heard of using particle board for humidification before. I use a 1" layer of wet perlite for humidification. It is cheap and easy.

My favorite thing to use is cloning trays (seedling trays) with large domes. The local grow stores have tall domes for clones not those short seedling ones, throw a little damp vermiculite on the bottom and I throw my casings right in them. There will be some pics posted soon. Now Im putting casings directly into the bottom works great so far. Oh, yeah the domes are only $7.95 and bottoms $4.95 and I pull about 3 oz out of each.

What the PF Tek was talking about was how the water droplets from a spray bottle damages the cake some how, so it says to put a thin piece of partical board so you spray that with the bottle a few times, than put the top back on it before it can escape. The water droplets hit the boards and break into smaller droplets and I guess become moisture/humidity in the air.
It also said to put saran wrap over the top but to lift it up daily to ventilate the air inside. I sprayed the inside of the container with lysol like there was no tommorow so I think that it is pretty sanitized.

I also have a bit of an off-topic question but another that I have been wondering. From what I read, casing seems to be nothing more than crumbling the cakes and growing them in terrariums/humidity containers but how do they produce more than just the growing-on-cake method I am using?

Thanks. LSD Pirate.

A casing gives you the "potential" for a larger area to cultivate your shrooms on. Depending on the size of your casing, but for the most part if you use a nice sized plastic try say at least 3" deep that would give you more of an area to grow your shrooms on than what you would probably get from one cake. There are a few casing teks in the "Grow/find" section of the shroomery you should check it out.
