2. Light bulbs can be too much heat in an enclosed space. They can get dangerously hot, actually. If the space is small, or your near flammable materials, use a flourescent light.
Whether or not thats suitable as a heat source depends on your ambient temp.

I am new at this to but why do you think you have screwed up this batch. My first batch is turning out great but I had white fluff which lana helped me determine what it was b/c mycelium and cobweb mold supposedly look a lot alike. Ryche has a lot to say oh the cobweb mold so check him out.
For the terrerium get a tub throw some screen in it and stick a humidifier on it w/ some 2l. bottles between them as resevoirs, thats what I did and it is working great. For the second go around I think I will do casings instead of cakes.... good luck

See, I'm not sure if the white fluffs are mold, and there is no real way that I can get pictures of it on the computer. Also, It was growing at a friends house first, so I have no idea how things were going up until now. It's been in the case for 5 days now, and I don't know what (if anything) has been done to it. And the friend who was taking care of it for me is now out of state and out of contact!

I don't want to sound all whiny, but is there some kind soul who could send me a spore print? I would be so grateful! I just want to grow, but I'm wondering if it'll end up to be worth my while. I've been trying to grow in my parents house, and so far, it's just ended up being a failure, waste of money, and very risky.

There, I'm done now. Did I bore you to sleep?

Thanks in advance for any input!

Hello, I hope this helps you a bit;-)

Question 1. - They are not doomed. The humidity may be a little too high. Casings don't need as much moisture as cakes do.

Cakes like high humidity, 92 to 98%
Casings like 85 to 92% humidity. If you see moisture dripping on the walls of your terrainum, you probably have too much moisture.

Your casing may have too much water in it too. If this is the case, be on the look out for contaminates!

Question 2. - Lightbulbs do a good job but you should try this idea that I got off of ShroomGod. I wish I had the link to show you..it's a post he had called "Winter's Coming" ...or something like that. Anyway, get a tuperware container with a lid, put a fish tank heater in it, cover it up with the lid, and then place your jars on the lid. It's a great way to effectively and safely heat your jars.

Questions 3. - Thats a tough one. As atlas said, cobweb mold and mycelium look alot alike. A good way to tell is to open your jar. If there is white fuzzy stuff on the dry layer of vermiculite than it may be cobweb mold. Mycelium won't grow on the dry verm...not enough moisture.

Question 4. - For what it's worth, it's cheaper and usually more effective to use your own "greenhouse" or terrainum. A 10 or 20 gallon fish tank with a plexi-glass top, or even use seran wrap to cover the top works great!

Question 5. - in my opinion you definitely don't need to 2 liter bottle setup. That type of setup is used to "bust up" the droplets of water from a humidifier. Casing don't need tons of humidity. I don't use a drip sheild, but some do....it gets to the point where person touches come into play

Good Luck!!!

Thanks a lot, Lana. Those were some great suggestions.

Oh, and a special message to you all: Sorry about asking for free spores. I should've realized how stupid that was.

You guys are great!
