I am using P.C. Equadors and rye in pint jars. I have a glovebox and no problems w/ contams. After a grain to grain transfer my jars grow fine, the bottom of my jars look like cleen white snowballs. The upper half of my jars look shrunken and more like heavily frosted grain than a snowball. I want one big snowball !! I think my problem is moisture. I use a incubator w/submerged fishtank heater and my normal room humidity is a nice 44%. I assume the problem w/ jar moisture must be from my preparation style. I bring grain to a boil and then simmer for 45 min. Then I drain put in jars and pc at 15psi for 1 hour. How do you guys do it? Do you have the same problems?

i just throw mine all in a jar with the right amound of water, then 45@15psi does the trick
i dont preboil/soak

how did you inoculate? agar? or spawn?

did you SHAKE it?
well, not shake.. just roll it end over end easily and it doesnt seem to shock the mycelium as much.

Whenever I birth I just save the best looking jar, break it up and add to freshly cooked jars (I let em cool first)

i just read that you're using pint jars, missed that the first time

Why dont you try something larger, so you can shake the rye to distribute the colonized rye

Here is a pic of what im talking about. I have a shity cam but you can still get the idea. Both halves are fully colonized but only the bottom looks right. Its as if the bottom stole all the moisture and nutrients from the top.

The grain at the top of the jars sticks together and is covered but it is noticibly shrunken and dry. Looks like you put normal grain in a dehydrator.

I am also having trouble getting pins. I have been 98% and 74-76% for almost 2 weeks now. bubbler has been going non stop and I have vent holes at the bottom. could this dry top problem have anything to do with my lack of pins?

Grain can be a bitch. What you probably have is either an uneven distribution of heat when incubating the jars, or dry air getting sucked into the jars during incubation. In either case, the answer is to make smaller air holes in your jar so less water will evaporate. Also, you probably don't have pins because the substrate may have recovered, but not tenaciously. That is, the rye is not being fully utilized because some of the grain is too dry to colonize properly. The reason why your situation sucks is because you can't do anything about it-the mycelium has surrounded dry rye and will not allow more water to enter each kernel because of its nonpolarity. If you don't end up with grain that is fully colonized thoroughly due to "dry spots", try adding some sterilized water to it when you break it up. However, be careful because bacterial contam. will set in if you're not careful

I havent tried the not so full jar approach. On my next batch I will leave a couple like that for comparison. I dont have holes but rather mm filter disks on my widemouth pint jars. I dont see how that could be a problem though since my incubator keeps a very high humidity. (submerged fish tank heater in cooler). Thanks all for the input.

I almost forgot. I have several jars bagged up in the fridge right now and after I am done cold shocking them I'm considering cutting the not so healthy half of the cake away. That only leaves me with 1/2 pint of cake to fruit though. What do you guys think. Is this needed? Is there enough material left for a healthy yeild ( I dont need lbs. or anything)? I can always make tea out of the not so good half's. If I combined them I would trip pretty well I think.

well, since you alrady have that colonized.
i would go find myself some quart rye jars
and autoclave them, and transfer the 1/2 pinte colonized into 2 or 3 of these

or any other larger jar you have

leave them about 1/2 -> 2/3 full (after pressure cooking)
that way you have lots of room to shake, and you wont have the "clumping" problem

FIRST I PREPARE THE RYE GRAIN BY BRINGING DISTILLED WATER TO A BOIL 2CUPS TO 1 CUP OF GRAIN.ONCE THE WATER IS BOILING ADD THE GRAIN AND TURN DOWN THE HEAT TO 2 OR 3 (SIMMERING).LET IT SIMMER WITH THE LID ON FOR 45 TO 50 MIN STIRRING OCASIONALY
WHILE GRAIN IS SIMMERING WASH YOUR JARS AND LIDS (1 QUART WIDE MOUTHS) REAL GOOD IN THE SINK,RINSE,THEN LAY THEM UPSIDE DOWN ON A CLEAN TOWEL CLOSE TO THE SINK.NOW I GET MY PRESSURE COOKER AND PUT ABOUT 2 INCHES OF WATER IN IT AND SET IT ON THE STOVE (NO HEAT JUST YET)WHEN MY RYE GRAIN HAS FINISHED COOKING I GET A SPAGHETTI STRAINER WITH SMALL HOLES AND PUT IT IN THE SINK.DRAIN THE RYE GRAIN AND TAKE A BIG COOKING SPOON AND JUST FILL THE JARS ABOUT 80% FULL.PUT THE LIDS ON UPSIDE DOWN WITH THE RUBBER PART UP THEN PUT THE RINGS ON THE LIDS
NOW START THE HEAT ON PRESSURE COOKER ON HIGH.PLACE JARS IN THE COOKER AND PUT LID ON,WHEN YOU HAVE 15 PSI THEN BRING THE HEAT DOWN TO 5 OR 6. PRESSURE COOK FOR 1 HOUR.LET IT COOL DOWN .THEN TAKE JARS OUT WITH 2 HAND TOWLES (1 FOR EACH HAND) AND SHAKE BACK AND FORTH A LITTE BIT.ONCE THEY HAVE COLLED ALL THE WAY DOWN (ROOM TEMP)THEN INNOCULATE IN STERILE CONDITIONS
I HAVE TAKEN THE SPORE PRINT AND JUST SCRAPED ABOUT 10% OF IT INTO THE JAR AND THAT WORKS GREAT WITH A STERILE SCAPEL
I HAVE TAKEN A JAR OF SPAWN AND PUT A SMALL HAND FULL INTO EACH NEW JAR AND THAT WORKS GREAT TOO, BUT THE TRICK IS TO REALLY SHAKE THEM.SHAKE THEM FOR AT LEAST A 1 MIN. OR 2 ,THE LONGER THE BETTER
THIS IS A FULL PROOF WAY THAT WORKS EVERY TIME IT GIVES YOU A PROPER MOISTURE CONTENT THAT IS IMPARATIVE TO GROWING OUT YOUR JARS AND BY REALLY SHAKING YOUR JARS AFTER INNOCULATING THEM YOU WILL SEE A MAJOR DIFFERANCE IN COLINIZATION, 10 TO A 11 DAYS

Well Im home from work and too tired to give birth tonight. I will probably just put the whole cakes in tomorrow and see if the cold shocking made a difference. Finn just detailed my usual grain procedure to a tee exept for the fact that I use grain to grain transfers not inoculations. I appreciate the info man thats alot of typing. Its great when people are that willing to help. If anyone knows a reason why I should prune them please post it. I may cut one down just to compare and I will let you all know if there are any interesting differences. I think I will do a transfer with some of the not so great mycelium on top just to make sure its not a different strain (if thats even possible). Goodnight all.
