Leaf cuttings in-depth * 1
    #5812445 - 07/02/06 03:09 PM (14 years, 10 months ago)

Leaf Cuttings are plant cuttings, not made from pieces of stalk or root but rather from either a whole leaf or part of a leaf.

If you can make leafcuttings, your opportunities to make cuttings from a given motherplant increase exponentially.

I have every reason to believe one can make leafcuttings from Salvia divinorum, which is important as this entheogenic sage can only be propagated through cuttings as it sets no seed.

Some time ago I took small SD leaves, moistened their lower halves, applied rooting hormone (mine is a dustpowder with 0.25% indolebutyric acid by Bayer) and then planted the leaves in small pots of moist potting soil, the top halves sticking out lika a sail. I placed them under inverted glasses.

To my surprise (it was a completely halfassed experiment) the leaves did not wilt. When I after a week or two gently pulled at the leaves, I distinctly heard tiny roots snapping
So no stem formed yet, but the leaves DID root on their own.

Now the business end of this thread: let's talk about leafcuttings

Do you know any good technique writeups, do you yourself make leafcuttings of any plant and how, which plants do and which don't..

Let's make this thread a leafcuttings special, as this important technique is seldom talked about and at least where it comes to Salvia Divinorum it can be of great value.
Discuss!

Looks great!

A cached page from the entheogen.com forums showed a discussion that made clear that leaf-cutting Salvia is hard but can readily be done if you include a piece of stem with the leaf.

I've become VERY interested in micropropagation/plant tissue culture which basically enables you to take a leaf of any plant and turn it into 1.000 cuttings, using a specialized Agar medium.
I'm trying to hack the official lab technique into a DIY home tek, if I do I'll post it in a separate thread.

That's where cytokinins come in!

Well are we talking tissue culture or leaf cuttings here? lol

I mean yeah maybe the leaf cuttings that root in dirt but don't set shoots just need some specialized propagation efforts like hormone rich sterile media....

You're right, two threads are getting mixed up here

But I think that if you would water a leaf cutting in soil with a dilute cytokinins solution, the leaf cutting would form shoots. It kinda has to then. A rooted leafcutting needs no sterility of any sort, so a drop of cytokinin-rich liquid (juice from leafy bean sprouts?) ought to work.

In theory all kinds should work. Cytokinins are universal in plant life and as far as I know interchangable, and they occur in highest concentration in especially young growth tips.

Willow branch would work, as would urine, as would the more reliable rooting-powders you can buy at garden stores. Some even got fungicides too.

Well here's a good write up about Psychotria viridis and it includes a section about leaf cuttings I've followed.
http://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/7265692#Post7265692

This is the result:

I count at least 5 shoots from those three leaves but I'm not sure that's all of them.

BTW this is a pretty old thread.

all i read was the first post but i have an interesting story to share

once apon a time a blue smurf bought some dried salvia leaves. He then choose to soak them for a quid. However he left a few in the glass, and eventually forgot about it all together sitting on a desk for weeks.

When the blue smurf finally found the glass their was no more water left, but their were very tiny lines on the side of the glass coming from the leafs, looked like tiny roots.

Smurfs certainly do drugs. Don't you always see them cooking something fishy in their BIG POT...

Can you root leaf cuttings from Salvia divinorum and get them to GROW shoots?
I bet any part of Sally D left to moist enough conditions will form roots, at least when I had my small cuttings in humidity tent the stalks started to form roots

Yeah but is it possible to grow from a single leaf? I mean it'd have to have axis for it to grow?

Is it like living 100 years with only a half a heart?
