Correct ID Request Enforcement.

For a long time now, we've had rules for ID requests, though everyday, almost every ID request post, those go ignored and unread. Why not Enforce correct IDing by deleting incorrect posts and automatically sending a message with a link to the rules? This would keep the ID requests from being crap, and would also probably keep people safer too in the long run.
My two cents.

believe me this has been thought of years ago, its best to just let the mods do what they are doing right now.

It seems we draw a crowd that are not so much into obeying rules.
We do the best we can.

I don't even bother helping people with ID anymore though, it's come to the point where the pictures are half assed, and rushed, so they can hopefully snag some psycho-actives to "trip m4xx0r". It's like people just run outside and grab mushrooms from their lawn, and freak out thinking they have something when most people who know about them wouldn't even bother picking them. Then you have people who don't know how to ID telling people "Yeah they look like "xxxx", great find!"
Eventually someone's gonna get sick.

Yea, I noticed that also, good thing I got used to the rules before I got used to the boards. Its getting kind of out of control though lately with nothing but pictures thrown out there asking for ID's...

I think Anno just implemented a splash screen that forces n00bs to read the rules before posting. I can't see it because I have too many posts. Could one of the newer members post here to verify the splash screen is up.

I totally agree. In the past I have treated moderating like a full time job, but without pay it becomes overwhelming. Could you make a puppet to test the splash screen for us?

It's a cute frog. Use it sparingly.
Thanks for the help. Hopefully the splash screen will cut down on some of the bad posts.

The only problem is people scroll through them without reading them to get to the boards.

It has been going on for a very long time. Ever since people began making ID requests here. There seems to be more properly put together threads these days. Compared to the past anyways. I have seen it far worse in the past, easily. Anno fixed the splash screen, we have sticky threads right at the top of the forum. If some people are too anxious or slow to see all of that, they have a problem.
Just look at the tones of the sticky thread titles. Obviously inspired by years of frustration from constantly reminding people to read the rules.
I haven't been posting a whole lot in here lately, but I pretty much watch everything that goes on here. Some times I don't have time to write long posts out, even though I may be able to answer the question or provide info. I do view every thread in this forum and check it daily at least.

The rules are more like guidelines first of all. And there's noobs on this forum (just like all of you were once too) we've asked our share of stupid questions when we first started out but you cant penalize people for not having the knowledge to use the proper lingo and provide every single bit of information you need to ID something by reading a single post. You can on the other hand penalize people for stupidity and what I like to call jackassism. Yes some people ask question that either completely lack the information to answer, or are purposely ignorant and distasteful and those are the ones taken off by the mods.
But there's people who don't know as much as more experienced persons and simply don't have the knowledge to provide all the information. Most of the time they do provide enough that some of us can lead them in the right direction and offer some advice .
After all what are forums for if you cant turn to the people on them for help in areas you don't know much about?

The rules were created through trial and error as time went on. As the site continues to increase in size and through time, so many of the same redundant questions are asked. I think that threads with actual substance deserve more attention and not be covered up by threads with little to no content.
In an "anything goes" style setting, the board becomes cluttered and spammed with redundant questions - which leaves threads with good content and substance hard to find. One would have to sift through everything - it becomes overwhelming to keep an eye out for bad information when you have to read all of those extra posts. This is one of the reasons rules were created to begin with.
If people know that they can get away with it, some no longer want to study, learn, or read - most would likely just post any little question or doubt that they might have. Learning from literature is more effective. I can understand and would work with someone who was confused or had problems understanding something that they read.
Just about any type of question was welcome in the beginning. It was a much smaller community then. This place has exploded with popularity since. I think that as long as it is allowed, people will abuse the forum by asking questions only and not doing any real reading. I have witnessed it.

This is the text of the splash screen:
Welcome to the Mushroom Hunting Forum!
In the interest of all members we would like to ask you to follow a few basic
rules when posting in this forum.
First and foremost, read the
Mushroom
Hunting Forums Rules and Guidelines
Yes, we know they are long, but to read them takes
way shorter than your hospital stay after a mushroom
poisoning.
If you are posting an identification request, it
is critical that you describe mushrooms fully and accurately in
order to get a proper identification.
A good picture of the mushrooms is invaluable, but not required.
Along with the pictures YOU ARE REQUIRED to provide
the following data:
- Habitat (where [woods, pasture, state, province, country, altitude] and what [soil, dung, wood (dead, living, what kind of wood?)] does it grow on)
- Characteristics of the gills (color, attached/not, gills/pores,
etc)
- Characteristics of the stem (length, diameter, color, texture, hollow/solid,
thin/thick, etc)
- Characteristics of the cap (diameter, color, texture, conical/spherical,
convex/concave, etc)
- Spore print color (very important!)
- Color that the mushroom bruises
- Scent of the mushroom
- Anything else you might find important
In addition to this, a few more (common courtesy) rules:
- No flaming of other members.
(Flaming is defined as insulting, harassing, or otherwise being nasty
and condescending towards other members)
- Keep threads on-topic and do not fill the
forum with inane chatter and post whoring.
- Post with content. Inane posts are going
to be deleted and the poster warned.
- Post with respect for your fellow members.
All posts are subject to the discretion of the forum moderators.
Repeated
failure to comply with these rules can and will lead to a board wide ban.

But it's not penalizing them, that would be like banning them. It's just making them correct their thread so people can (for the most part) accurately and safely help them.
