Faht's self-healing tyvek lids

heres how i'm doing my lids from now on and thought i would share. all you need is tyvek, tape, silicone, and a jar band. first we start with two layers of tyvek (ink side up) screwed down tight with a band...
Next apply duct tape like this...
The larger triangle is for silicone and the smaller is left as is for the gas exchange hole. I use just aquarium silicone... it's 100% silicone, so i don't know why they call it 'aquarium'... anyways, it looks like this...

now dab a bunch (at least 1/8 an inches worth) onto the larger uncovered triangle...

now this is the important part... silicone works great for self healing innoc ports as long as it sticks. Jar lids are not good for this BUT tyvek is excellent, as long as you push it into the tyvek.. you do this by getting your finger really wet so that it won't stick to it and press down firmly on the glob of silicone or you can use a wetnap etc. try to spread the silicone out a bit to cover all the tyvek...

I disected a dry silicone glob to show how well it stuck to the tyvek....
This is what it should look like after it's dry and ready for use...
these lids can be used over and over again... just replace the bottom piece of tyvek.

A rather splended tek right there. I was wondering, tyvek seems to be an american brand and i found these air-mail envelopes in my local post office and was wondering if these are just as good? http://img.epinions.com/images/opti/62/ae/3096384EQUA0262-resized200.jpg Its the classic type envelopes. Just by looking at them, they do look kinda thin if u know what i mean. Also, do you reckon that standard silicone 'sealent' for bathrooms could be used? Thanks, i'll be trying this out

you can have tyvek mailed to you from the post office for free. just go online and order however much you want and they send it right to your door. if you can rip the envelop, it's not tyvek.. and like oatman said.. it'll say right on the envelop somewhere that it's made of tyvek.. in really plain sight (not hidden anywhere, so stop lookin. lol hehehe) not sure if they'll send it out of the country... don't see why not. check it out.

Ah right. Well i guess i'll have to have another look around. I just thought it was a type of breathable paper, not synthetic material. Looking on the web, it looks pretty expensive.

hey, np. i love to help, yo. i should also mention that i don't use these lids for pf jars... that may be confusing.. these i use for grain jars and myc. isolation jars (which ill be posting a tek on soon, can't upload any more pics today.) for pf jars, i just use the standard four hole w/tape lids. but these self-healing lids are the shizzy... not just sayin mine are, but any are. they are a zillion times better than just taping up the hole... with tape, you are going to get mold spores sticking on the underside of the sticky side on the hole over your sub. you may innoc. fine but when you go to shake... they will contam by rubbing on the tape. so these are great for preventing that.

i've had troubles with the silicone sticking to the metal lids... but it 'seeps' into the tyvek. i do use metal lids for pf jars tho... not sure if thats what you meant.. but there it is in case. i use the same formula for cakes as everyone else. EXCEPT that i put 1/3 c. water instead of 1/4 c. then water slowly at birth up to pinning.. the cakes are heavy at pinning.. it's definately a balancing act. the more water without contam's = more mushies.

Good stuff

I use just aquarium silicone... it's 100% silicone, so i don't know why they call it 'aquarium'... anyways, it looks like this...
Most tubes of silicone that you see at hardware stores contain fungicides, etc. that are definately not aquarium safe. Those that are labeled 'aquarium' do not have these additives. Just a FYI from an old reefkeeper.

how long do those lids last? do you reuse them over and over, or remake them everytime?

I use them over and over... i just replace the bottom piece of postal tyvek. also, should mention that they tape will shrink a bit in the pc.. doesn't make a difference really, just thought i should mention it. so you may want to make the tape cover the tyvek a bit more so when it does shrink.. it doesn't pull away from the tyvek.. not that this is big deal either.. just put some more tape on there after the pc if that happens. i would say a twenty time use is about right on the life span of these lids... but thats only because the self healing port would be worn. if you want a longer life on them... just make the port larger... i've done a few where half the tyvek is covered with 1/8 in. silicone. you use a lot of silicone but they will last a LOOONG time. but like i said, if you switch out the bottom tyvek every use (which aint no thang) then there is really only one innoc. hole per use.
