the best way to pick

Hi, I'm just wondering if there is a final concensus on how best to pick. Since I've only found one spot so far in the last two years, and there's so few, I'd like to pick all the way down to the root to get every bit of stem that I can. Yet I don't want to descourage growth in the next flush. I remember someone saying that it's okay to pick all the way down, completely, because it is the spores that matter, not the roots. Although I've searched the shroomery I can't find where I had read that. I've also had respected people here, (bluemeanie) reccomend cutting instead. Is there any other opinion or thoughts on this?

Cut at the base with a sharp knife..Or use a pair of scissors..
Mushrooms don't have roots for say they have Mycelium and it does matter :wink:
A nice clean cut...

Also, look closely if there are any tiny mushroom pins growing around the base. If there are pins be sure not to disturb them. Leaving a little stem behind in exchange for a whole mushroom is a good trade! :mushroom2:

I had a friend who said that, and at the time I thought it made sense.... But after a bit more research on the issue, I came to the understanding that spores will not simply fall off by thumping or flicking the caps.... Maybe a few spores that were ready to drop soon anyway, but spores drop gradually, which is why the longer you leave a cap down on paper for a spore print, the darker the print- more spores will drop after time, and ONLY TIME. 

You don't hear people recommending that you flick a cap over a piece of paper for spore printing, because it doesn't work- you aren't gonna get enough spores on the paper to see a print.  Only time will assure the dispersal of spores, not abuse.  :wink:

I thought you might say that... But think about it- If it drops spores by flicking it, than that means the mushroom has already begun to drop some spores from the gills. The amount of spores that may fall due to "flicking" is unsubstantial and virtually insignificant. If the mushroom is mature, it has already dropped some spores, and you will not make any impact by flicking them. If spores have not matured yet, then flicking is utterly useless.

Nice!!  That looks like it was made for mushrooms!  :smile:  the stalk being similar shape to a cigar.  I notice it is hard to cut through some stems(due to thickness), but this would undoubtedly aid the process.

What someone asked earlier, about it applying to indoor cultiviation...anyone got an aswer to that? Cause in a way I'd rather cut them near the base as not to disturb the mycelial network, but at the same time I get the feeling if you left a piece of the base there it would start rotting or molding??

For indoor..Such as cakes. Its a twist and pull removal system.
They have a tendency to grow more towards the top of cakes so they remove easily.
If you cut from a cake or a log and you leave a stump you may encourage rot in some ways..
So for me its twist and pull.. :wink:

Well actually, it can hurt depending on the species.  Cubes are pretty tough, but little subbs and liberty caps.... Naw, they'd fall apart if you flicked them.

Oh man, now I REALLY want to find a conocybe or something brittle and flick at it to watch it explode into a trillion little pieces.    :ooo:
