Only pick what you need.

We have been getting some good rain over the last few days and my feilds are full of Bluemeanies. I could pick as many as i like, but my plan is to keep them growing for years to come, so i only pick what i need to study and leave the rest to release their spores for the future. I think all Hunters should only pick what they need to preserve the shrooms in their area.

We always thump the caps of the cubensis we gather so more spores are released also. I dont really know if there is any truth to this but it seems to make a lot of sense especially if it is a older one that is kinda dry. Oh an thanks a lot for letting us know you have the luxury of picking an choosing your copelandias...must be one hell of a luxury!!

very admireable indeed , yes i to thump every cap i pluck , and i also keep them a i -holey- bag that is full of holes ...like a Orange saq , it releases spores every step you take . and i shack the saq over the hay that they eat and all around it , so when they eat the hay they eat many many spores in there crap for compost for the next year , every year there are more than the last.

LOLOLOLOL you people and your flicking the caps. No matter how many times you flick the caps you're not going to make the basidia produce spores any quicker. In my opinon it's dumb and a waste of time. You'd be better off doing what MagicRooms said and leaving a few full mushrooms behind, they'll release a hell of a lot more spores if you leave them than they will if you flick the caps.

Looking good man!
I second that of leaving some behind. I've always done this. I feel like shit anyways if I took EVERY single specimen. That would just be raping the feild of its glory

I known Gumby Dude, thumping does nothing, most of the spores are dispersed when the cap opens within a few hours or so.

Lets think about this if every time someone who knew the diffrence picked every single edible mushroom they found eventually there wouldnt be any of those times walking down a trail that u find that little suprise package from mother nature. If there is one thing shrooming has taught me and that is to respect nature and to integrate with it not rape and pilliage all it has to offer...so be nice... leave a couple of caps...someday (if and when) spores are illegal (everywhere)to have we will still be able to hunt for them in the wild.I say FREE THE MUSHROOM!!...Peace

I agree. Ive had patches that friends and I have been supporting for years, as in watering when needed, even one spot that we started ourselves by introudcing an isolated variety of subaeruginosa, only to have a few school kids come and plunder the spot completely before any of the fruits are able to open proprerly or anything. Within one or two years, the patches seem to diminish. I always take enough to keep my stocked, but enough for others or for as many spores as possible to be distributed. SOme spots i go to have literally 3000+ fruits in a 4 X 4 Metre area, so there is plenty for everyone.

i know about people plundering fields and patches. i've even seen edible mushroom patches raped, trampled and trashed, but it's the psily ones that get it the worst. some people's kids...

Here's another one: "If I don't pick it then somebody else will!"
BTW I always leave few shrooms from a group even if I don't have enough. But when you think about it, what could be better for those shroom than that you collect the spores and send them to shroomerites so they can spread all over the world?

I also shake the ones i pick to drop what they have ready as im sure at least 100+ spores will be realised this way so feel its not a totaly point less thing and remeber every little helps.Occasionaly i hook one in a tree or shrub just to give it a little hight so any spores droped can catch the wind. But this is just for my conscience as i as well leave all babies and a few matures behind. One thing that annoys me is the mushroom hunters that knock over every thing they see with a stick just to see its gills for id pourposes then if its not what there after just leave the broken shroom and move on these ones i see i oftern hook into trees about head high no matter what the species. No idear if this really helps but it does make me feel better about my own picking. At one royal park i worked in we had a big problem with this practise of flipping mushrooms with a stick, and anyone found to be doing this were ejected from the park. A big thing ive noticed in the uk is people kicking and stomping on Amanita Muscaria (Fly Agaric) as every one thinks there saving children from eating it an dieing this practise annoys me a great deal but i suppose i see were there coming from and its just a lack of knowlege.
Dam those ozzy shrooms do look nice

i think some of the measures taken by hunters to help distribute spores is ineffective at best, but since it can't hurt and may help, why not?
ganja, i saw the largest fruiting of Agaricus campestris i've ever seen almost entirely stomped and trampled as a result of this "toadstool kicking" practice. really a shame.

God Damn the ignoance among the greater population of this world is staggering!! To hear that people are stomping on Fly Agarics really pisses me off!!! Where i'm from (Ca.) finding a Fly Agaric means nothing short of a whole days worth of driving and hiking and hunting for the elusive 'white rhino' as it were ...and here these people are stomping them because the are too ignorant and close-minded to even appreciate the mere beauty of an Amanita let alone its psyco-active properties.
