Hello, i'm a newbee to mushroom growning. I have a question about what kind of rye seed use for a substrait. I picked some up from the local mill. There were three differnt types. annual, perenial, and another one, not sure what it was. I got the annual and put 100ml rye and 130 distilled water in a 500 ml. ball jar. and cooked 4 jars in a pressure cooker for a hour at 15 psi. after it cooled for 8 hrs. i open it up tp notice the rye was not easy to break up even at this point. The more i shook it, the more it packed self together in sort of a oily type clump with an oil like substance on the inside of the glass. I inoculated it anyways. after 5 days now they all seem to be growning mycelium but the oil substance worries me. is this normal? the the seed are very plump looking and some are split open. not sure if i did this right. Any replies would be greatly apprisiated. Thanx

You do not want the rye grass seed. When you go back to buy more ask for "rye berries". There are several teks here at the Shroomery describing the proper hydration method.

Rye berries and rye grain are the same thing. Rye grass seed is different. It's the seed for lawn and pasture grass, and if you use it, you want to use 1/2 as much water by volume as grass seed. For 1/2 liter by volume of grass seed, only use 1/4 liter of water. The correct amount of gypsum to use in a jar is what you can hold in a pinch between your thumb and forefinger.
If you use rye berries, rinse them very well before using. It's the dirt and chaff that makes them stick together later. I use gypsum in rye berry jars as well. Use equal amounts of water and grain by volume. RR

Thanx RogerRabbit, I'll try that. I didn't wash the rye the first, that might help too. Also I got to looking at the rye i bought and theirs ants, bugs, and other chunks of stuff that don't look right. I was also looking around the site and read about useing WBS for the substraight. I might try that. I seen how to hydrate it and prepare it. Thanx again.

you may want to steep your rye berries for a day in water before use then simmer them for 45 minutes. rinse after simmering with a few pans of fresh water. this way when you add the berries to your jars you will not have to worry about water content - they will already be at the correct water content (not watery but the grains will be puffed out and engorged with moisture. Also this helps to prevent bacteria build up because the bacteria endospores often stay viable from directly from rye berries even after steriliztion. there is a tech in the grain or guide sections that informs on this. give it a look you will find it. i would like to just add water to the grain jars and sterilize myself but i think these extra steps take away some of the bad potentials that could happen. let me know what your outcome is. i consider myself an intermidate cultivator working on learning more. i have had success with pf cakes, then pf casing and then onto manure and grain trays. still have a lot to learn because i still run into trouble in my processes. f
