Shaking jars may slow growth
    #575554 - 03/11/02 05:58 AM (19 years, 7 months ago)

I have 5 pint jars of birdseed & verm innoculated on the same day. I shook 3 of the jars after 2 weeks and left 2 untouched. One week later the unshaken jars are slightly (15%?) more colonized than the shaken jars.

This is a small sample size and means little, but I am wondering if the damage to the mycelia is worth the extra points of contact. My substrate was loosely packed. I might agree with violent shaking if the substrate is clumped and stalling, but with good growth, I think it counter-productive.

1 one time shaking of the jars should definitively speed up the colonisation time.
If it doesn?t, you might have a bacterial contamination problem.

Also, it helps to move the air around in the jar. Just dont vigorously shake a loose substrate. :smile:bluhoney

Definitely no contams. All jars are quite healthy.

Perhaps the reason that the unshaken jars are doing so well is that instead of using the method of innoculating in 4 or 5 points on the surface of the substrate (thus increasing the chance for contams), is that I make one cone shaped hole in the center of the substrate going almost to the bottom of the jar and only use one innoculation hole. I move the needle around slightly so that the spore solution will make contact with several points. Thus the spores germinate from deep in the center instead of from the top surface, which makes the spreading easier. (This was not my idea, but I will be using it from now on.)

Do you have any links on this birdseed and verm tek you've used? i have been thinking about using birdseed, but 2 weeks seems aweful long for colonization.
rye is done in about 10 days.

Also, i've never seen a need to shake them when they are spawned (provided the spawn was fairly well distributed to begin with) vigorous shaking is bad, but a light shaking i have never seen much oif a problem with

Mine were slow because I did not keep them at a proper temp for the first week (70F) now at about 82F, so is probably roughly the same speed as rye. I precooked the wild birdseed without separating the sunflower seeds. This may help to kill the endospores (am 100% contam -free so far!) and gets the water level just right. I used about 4 parts BS to 1 part verm and may eliminate the verm altogether in the future as it does not seem necessary unless you are having problems with jars drying out. I PCed with the jar lids cranked down tight with Anno's Tyvek seal on the outside of the inner lid with no problems.
