Cottony Mycelium

I was wondering if different strands produce different mycelium. I have seen some picture with very dense strandy mycelium and some with very cotton like mycelium. Mine for instance is very cottony and not very strandy at all. I was wondering if this was a sign of bad or perhaps even weak mycelium. My friend is growing cambodians and the cotton like mycelium is growing out of the casing. I am 99% sure it is not cotton web mold.

Yes mycelium does have a few different looks, depending on strain and environment,


Cobweb is easy to spot,

Yea it definitely is not like that. It is very together, but more fluffy then dense stringy mycelium if you know what i mean. d=-\

Not only can different strains produce different myc structure but even the same strain can produce stronger or weaker myc. I think that's referred to as phenotype.

This is one of the nice things about agar. You can grow out some myc and cut out a chunk of the aggressive stuff. The jars that are colonized with that pheno will be more robust.

Someone, correct me if I'm wrong. I'm new and I don't want to be giving out bad advice. =)

A buddy of mine happens to have grown some Cambodians, and from what we've seen there mycelium is just like that. Or at least the phenotype we have is, but hes grown out from spores a few times and always sees cottony growth. But this strain still grows very fast and fruits well :shrug:
