It is more likey to fruit, where as the cottony mycelium is less likey to fruit. The "stringy" mycelium is called rhizomophic(sp?) and the cottony is called tomotose(sp?) Please excuse my spelling, I'm too lazy to look it up right now. Another reason strandy is better, is because it grows faster and more vigorus than the cottony mycelium, lessening the chances for contamination.

Some of my jars has stringy mycelium in spots and cotton mycelium in other spots. My main concern is that where the stringy mycelium is you can see substrate behind it, the mycelium isn't very thick. Is this a problem or just fine? Should I let the cake colonize longer till you can't see the substrate behind it?

This is fine. Give your jars a few days to make sure that they are totally colonized after the outside is completely covered.

The strandy growth should fill in as it grows. Cubensis mycelium typically grows cottony at first and then shoots out strands. The strands will keep growing and fill in thicker as it progresses.

So basically, wait for the strands to fill everything in before you birth the cakes. You shouldn't be able to see any substrate when your jars are finished.

I have that problem also, except there is condensation between the jar and the mycellium, and I also, can see the substrate behind the thin stringy mycellium. I just wasnt sure, if the condensation could have been eating at the mycellium making it thinner. Any suggestions would be appreciated.
