I wrinkled up my forehead when he said they have to be careful not to pick the 'roots'  Other than that, it was entertaining.

Note they use gypsum.  I've been preaching about gypsum for a long time, but it seems many growers still leave that out, then wonder why yields are poor.  I add gypsum to grains, compost, and casing.

The one thing that I nocite was the handful of grain spawn,

And the 'unsanitary' conditions, well at the fruiting stage.

so as far as gypsum goes, its to help eleviate greasyness of compost, to help it provide compost a grainier texture, and to help it retain more water and helps eliviate grains from sticking together.

So. Now if i am making some spawn bags ala bluehelix's right up with the following recipe:

48 Cups of horse manure (shredded)
24 Cups of vermiculite
16 1/2 Cups of dry WBS (do not soak or simmer)
4 Tablespoons of dry Kelp Meal
6 Tablespoons of Canola or Vegetable oil
21 Cups of water

how much gypsum would i use in this substrate recipe, and does it really help that much?

Sorry for the thread hijack.

Four cups should do it. I try to use it at up to ten percent of the manure/compost. The two biggest uses of gypsum are to supply calcium and sulphur which are necessary for good fruitbody development, and ph buffering. Sulphur is sour and calcium is sweet. Between them, they keep the ph from swinging as much during the cropping cycle. You still need to lime to balance the ph. The ability to prevent grains from clumping in a jar is an added bonus.

Yes. The garden gypsum I bought recently is a byproduct of the drywall industry. It even has little pieces of white, brown, and green paper mixed in. Obviously it's the broken pieces from the factory that makes sheetrock. I'm sure you could buy a piece of drywall, then smash it with a hammer to pulverize it. Remove as much of the paper as you can.

Just do a few internet searches for 'garden gypsum' and read up.

often times you can ask for the cut strips at home depot that they use for
seperating the bundles, it saves them the hassle of walking it to the trash
of course a 4x10' sheet runs about $6 so it's cheap regardless
