(help please) can i take jars out of PC to cool
    #585519 - 03/21/02 05:09 PM (23 years, 3 months ago)

hi, i only have one preasure cooker that can only hold 4 jars at a time.
i usualy just let them cool in the PC overnight and inoculate the next day.
im curious if i can take them out of the PC and put them in a tupperware container thats been sterlized with "lysol" type cleaning wipes untill they cool down (or the next day).
mainly because i hate waiting a week to finish off 12 jars.

i tried searching for something on this with no answers to my question.
hope someone can help.

thanks

You can remove them but don't release the steam. Wait at least until the cooker cools enough that there is no pressure. If you stick it under cold water to cool it, it can drop the pressure before your jars are cooled enough and steam part of your water out of the jars, throwing off your water content and causing stalling jars. I've seen just sitting the cooker outside for about an hour works pretty well. It's  easy too tell when it's ready. If the jiggler makes any noise at all when you touch it, then it's too soon. Try not to bounce it and cause the jiggler to releive any of the pressure on the way out the door. Hope that helps.:peace:

Yes, i'm sure that you are aware that they will suck in air as they cool so you will want them in a rather sterile enviroment. My pressure cooker can only hold 3 jars at a time but I can stack them and do 6 at a time (perfect amount). Anyways, try and get the 1/2pint salmon jars.

im not waiting a week. but it takes me a little under a week to finish off 12 jars.
1 day to sterlize. have to wait till next day to inoculate.
takes 4 or 5 days.

im aware that they suck in air.
do you think that a tupper ware container that was cleaned with h202 or clorox wipes would be sterile enough?
this is what i store the jars in after i inoculate them so i thought it might work.

as far as my jars. i have the taller half pint ones.
i couldnt find the smaller ones. my friend has abunch he got from walmart
but they told me they were seasonal and wouldnt have any till summer (not too far away i supose)
i already have 24 tall half pint ones for now anyways.
thanks for your help.

Yeh, the tupperware would be ok. Try to let them cool in the cooker if you can be patient, its tough sometimes. If you are colonizing jars(any sized) in 12 days, that is fast. very fast for non-shakable spawn jars. spawm made with a shakable medium, like rye, can easily be colonized in 5 days.(if innoculaed with grain spawn)

my friend always used to take them out as soon as the pressure was gone, he took them out with the foil still on, let them cool on some paper towels with lysol sprayed on them, with another paper towel on top.......after cool he innoculated then taped them up.

One of my elves says if he is in a hurry he takes the jiggler off, lets the steam escape then lets the jars cool on the counter. No other precautions are taken other than the bit of common sense it takes to be working in a clean enviroment.

Yeah, I think I saw where that elf posted the other day.
It was: " I followed the PF Tek to a T and just don't
understand why my jars are stalling"

My dwarf removes the pressure regulator thingy on top. As soon as all the steam is released, he removes his jars from the pressure cooker and lets them cool in the box that the jars cam in. He hasn?t had one contamination problem yet.
