I found a few of these mushrooms. Here is the note I made on them:
This very white mushroom seems to be a loner which grows in sunny patches of green grass. I can usually spot thier white caps peaking out making a stark contrast to the green. The caps of these mushrooms are silky smooth. I found these in early June after getting a healthy dose of rain. One I found near a pile of compost composed primarily of horse manuer and wood shavings. Another, I found behind the house by our terrace, And yet another I found in the horse pastuer. The only shade they seemed to be getting was from the grass surrounding their stalk. I can say the grass was no longer than 10" to 12" high. The mushroom it's self is no bigger than 4" And I never find more than one. Altogether, these mushrooms were probably found at least 60-150 yards apart. Thier spore print is dark brown, almost black. They were found in the northeastern region of Maryland.
In the wild:

Scale, next to a standard pill bottle. About 3" long.

Hey 76.......awfully white mushroom......youve got whats called Agrocybe.....not sure of the exact species but not a safe group for eating cause of dangerous lookalikes....great prints and pics especially the descriptions....good to also describe gill attatchment.....also the pic of the print itself as many people consistantly misread them....

The little white Agrocybe are a harbinger of summer around here... perhaps the most common cosmopolitan mushroom in my neck of the woods. Lately I've been noticing large numbers of A. praecox fruitbodies in parks and yards. I wouldn't necessarily say yours are praecox however… I think they look like a different species perhaps. One thing to keep in mind with mushrooms is the huge variation in appearance among like species. For the purpose of a firm identification ideally you want a handful of fruitbodies in different stages of development. Noting how the mushroom is attached to the substrate can be important with certain genera and species as well… e.g. is a species of Agrocybe that forms sclerotium.
