Boil Pasteurization in Oven Bag?
    #5726757 -

I don't happen to have a spare pillowcase kicking around and I kinda like the idea of getting the water/substrate consistency squared away before pasteurizing, so I was wondering what the community thought of this idea:

1) Mix hpoo and verm substitute (Schultz Multi-Purpose Soil Conditioner, basically crushed hydroton). Water until field capacity is reached.
2) Put mix into oven bag, insert thermometer with gauge sticking out, tie off opening.
3) Place bag into pot of 180F water. Bag isn't completely submerged because I don't want water seeping into the bag, but all substrate material will be below waterline.

This sound tenable? I imagine it'll work fine since I'll have a thermometer to guarantee I reach pasteurization temps.

Also, what are the temp ranges for correct pasteurization? By this I mean "what temp will be too low to pasteurize" and "what temp will be too high and kill off good organizms?"

not over 170F, i really like the pillow case method though because when
you are letting it drain/cool in the sink it gets to pretty much the
pergect moisture content. its just a pillow case pick out your crappiest
one and turn it into your poo pillow case

Problem is, I don't have any spare pillow cases. I always just throw out my old one when I buy a new one. =)

I pasteurize almost exactly like you propose except I use quart jars. Get your stuff to field capacity then load your jars. Tyvek or whatever can be put on them if you're not going to use them right away. Put them in the PC or other large kettle with a good sealing lid. Fill COLD water two thirds of the way up the jars. If the jars try to float, put a plate or some other weight on them. Turn on the stove and bring to a boil. Remember, glass is an insulator so the heat won't immediately transfer. Allow the water to boil for five minutes, then just shut off the stove. If using a large, thick kettle, that's all you have to do. With a smaller pot, you might need to turn on the stove again in half an hour for a few minutes. Using a thermometer the first few times will help you work out the routine to follow. Keep the center of the jars or bags above 140 for an hour, but try to keep it below 170 at all times.
