I think earlier today i read a post about sterilizing casing materials in a pressure cooker and putting them in reynolds oven bags. I just got some and i was wondering exactly how to do it. I have two sizes, turkey size and large size. which do u recommend? also on the back of the box it says to add flower and make a slit in the bag. do you do this? do you put water in the pressure cooker if you do it this way? i really need someone to guide me through this. this is going to be my first time doing this and i don't want to screw up. any help will be appreciated. thanks.

i've never used 'em but i was in on the posts... i use the autoclavable bags from mycelium fruits, but they're pretty much the same thing. use the size that doesn't touch the sides of the PC, as they might melt, not likely, but the autoclavable bags get a melting look to 'em if they touch the side of the PC the whole time. i recommend using the 50/50 tek (50% peat moss/50% vermiculite)... add enough water to make it all moist. throw it all in the bag and PC for 30 minutes at 15lbs. and then let cool over-night. when you go to case, put about an inch of your mix on bottom, then substrate ('bout an inch thick), and then another inch of your mix. DONE. i use foil pans that are about 4 inches tall. then just set them in a 10 gallon aquarium. a day later you'll see the humidity in there that just comes out of the casing - it's plenty. i don't even use perlite.

I use these oven bags made by McCormick called Bag n Season. You can find em in the grocery store in the section where you would find Shake n Bake. They come in little packets (just throw away the seasoning unless you're making pork chops ;) and are a really good size. I just put my 50/50 casing mix in there with plenty of water and boil em in a large pot. Works great! Good luck...

No slit in the bag, and when the bag is in the pc'er you want about an inch - 1/2inch of water up the sides.
