oven bags, ph balancing, etc.

the thing that lives under my bed is starting its third grow and has decided to go bulk. straw, cowshit, these things are easy to get, but what it wants to know is: is the a balanced ph important in the bulk sub, (assuming that its not TOO acidic or alkaline).  the casing mix i know should be balanced and because i bought mine premade it already is .  also, when using oven bags for pastuerization, can i still use straw?  what i mean by that is can i use it mixed in w/ the shit when its still all dry, or does is need to be brought to feild capacity in a way other than just adding water to the mix?

hum,i'm having a hard time understanding your question.you can use straw with poo at the same time,it works good that way any how,it breaks up the consistency of the poo just like verm does.as for the ph get ph meter or test kit optimal range for ph is 7.0-7.5 maybe even 8.0 would be good.

you can pastuerize both mixed at same time if you want.

just make sure that the poo has been leached (removed of excess ammonia) and it should be on the dry side, a little aged. You don't want steaming fresh cow poo. Yes you can use the oven bag tek to pasteurize poo and straw together. I recommend mixing in a little verm with the poo and cut up straw to make sure it isn't to wet in the end, a little moisture insurance if you will.

I'm not sure about straw and poo, but when you pastuerize straw alone, you want the ph to hit 12 or 13

having a ph this high will render contams useless for at least 2 weeks, but mycelia is one strong mofo and can take the ph with no problems

ravinoff, i have seen the source where you read this, but it was heavily questioned then, and was part of a more complicated procedure. i would not recommend ever letting a pH above 9 anywhere near your shrooms - most growers aim for a casing pH of around 8, so that acidic byproducts of metabolism bring it down into the ideal fruiting range (7.5ish). a pH of 13 is so strong as to make a hole in your skin.

have you actually grown mushrooms using straw? if not, please be very careful about giving advice.

ok, sorry, I just assumed it worked 'cause of Shroomqt's massive straw log

Anyhow, in a few weeks I'm gonna try a straw log and a few experimental zip lock bags of straw except I'm gonna fruit that invitro and see what happens....

I'll be sure to get back to you on my results

good luck with the straw - but stay away from that strong alkali!

best place to start for straw is probably  this one  don't make it too hard for yourself!

no offence intended. sk

Hmmm, thanks a bunch shirley

I think I'm gonna make the straw log with the high ph, and use that method to prepare the straw I'm gonna put in bags

yet again, thanks for the advice
