Incubator

I was recently pondering about the use of an incubator. I have always just thrown my jars in a box and placed them in my closet for about a month. This time around I took a batch of six jars and placed them in a small box, I placed this box upon my cable box in my room. If the cable box is always left on, a slight amount of heat is produced. My jars are kept just warm enough to remove the cool to the touch feeling they would have in my closet. Hopefully this will speed up my colonization times.

Well a true incubator should be kept with a moist heat source. Like an aquarium heater submerged in water as not to dry the jars out. Also you should use a thermometer to make sure your not killing jars. Optium temp is like 85 degrees and thermal death is at 106 when spores die. So a setup <$30 can be accomplished easily. Also remember the jars are a few degrees warmer inside cuz the mycelium produces heat when spreading.

Anno has a very simple incubator setup on his site. I saw it in a thread somewhere yesterday. I had to translate from German to English to understand it, but I've already made a firm decision to copy his setup when the cool weather hits Florida again. My jars slowed WAY down when my closet temp dropped from 84 to the lower 70's.

anno's setup is also what i use. i mean a copy of it not that i store my jars at his house :wink:. i recommend it 10x. very simple and automated and consistant and cheap. its got it all!!!!
