over-heated jars??
    #1043419 - 11/11/02 12:48 PM (21 years, 6 months ago)

OK, ive read some literature saying not to artificially (i.e. use a heat pad) heat jars, but but i want my shit to grow fast.... and i figure that i can be safe enough with like 5 layers of folded towels under the jars that are on top of an electricially-heated pillow... BUT... I innoc. yesterday and put the jars on top of the pad with only 2 layers of towels, went out & got fucked up last night, and came home this morning and my jars were warm to the touch.. not super hot,.. but alot hotter than the room temp (about 68 deg.) Think they are ok? Has anyone else done stupid shit like this and still had success? Thanks an advance.

Prohibition will work great injury to the cause of temperance. It is a species of intemperance within itself, for it goes beyond the bounds of reason in that it attempts to control a man's appetite by legislation, and makes a crime out of things that are not crimes. A Prohibition law strikes a blow at the very principles upon which our government was founded.

I bought a turkey thermometer (digital) for three bucks. It has one of those long metal rods to detect the temp, which is hooked to a wire which plugs into the thermometer. I have the metal rod situated right in the middle of the box my jars are in, in my closet. The thermometer is mounted outside the wall, and i ave a little heater heating the closet to 86 degrees. This works like a charm - and I don't have to open my closet to check the temp. Just thought I'd share.

I also used a heating pad for incubating and it was a big mistake. At first i couldnt get the temps to stay stable and it went up to 101 F (eeek!). Eventually i got it back down and all of the jars survived and are fruiting now. On my second patch of jars it dried the substrate out so i tossed them all. Heating pads are the devil, if you can use another method you should really consider it. And having the heating pad on all the time is a fire hazard waiting to happen.
