Tin foil on inoc. jars in incubator?
    #1421701 -

This monkey I know has some 1/2 pint jars that he recently inoculated and put into his rubbermaid incubator with the terrarium heater set to 82-83 degrees. The jars have tin foil over the lids with the inoc. holes and the tin foil is on very tight. My question is, should he keep the tin foil on the jars or remove it to allow better gas exchange. Also, is the temp of the incubator to high? I figure it will do fine because optimal incubation temps are 86 degrees and the jars of course are gonna be warmer inside.

Depends on what's in the jars.

Get a thermometer to measure the temp right beside the jars (I like the analog meat thermometers, e-z to read, accurate, and cheap, and nice looking, and shiny ).

If the jars are rye, with a pollyfill hole, take the tinfoil off, it won't help keep out any more contams, and you need the air exchange.

If it's PF-TEK, or WBS, I usually leave the Tinfoil on (university biology practice..., it's a habit) as it helps to keep out contams, and it sure beats messing around with pieces of tape.  No prob with air-exchange with these medium.

Mind you, this is all from personal experience, and the rye was done with chunks of cake, and the PF and WBS were innoculated with spores...

Leave the tinfoil on, and if the mycelium doesn't go nuts, then take it off.
