E and pregnancy?????
    #5725106 - 06/07/06 11:20 PM (17 years, 7 months ago)

I recently found out that I am two monthes pregnant and had taken ecstacy during my pregnancy. I know meth, alcohol, etc... are very dangerous, but what are the possible effects of E?

My uneducated answer is that if it was not heavy usage your child should be fine. Do some research though.

Hopefully Wiccan Seeker will answer your post he seems to have loads of knowledge about effects of chemicals on body and mind.

I have never heard of any instances of birth defects from E usage. You should probably check www.wikipedia.org just in case.

P.S. I'll bet the fetus had a great time.

Obvious not something you'll want to do again.

Most of the studies regarding E and pregnancy use involve animal models. Obviously, there are ethical constraints in doing human studies of this type.

The effects will vary according to the individual. Even when evidence "suggests" adverse effects, it doesn't necessarily mean they will occur (similar to smoking and cancer. Most people know that one guy who smokes 2 packs a day and is 90 years old).

One of the human studies I found is here: http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/entrez/query...l=pubmed_DocSum and does suggest some adverse consequences.

Another Dutch study says basically the opposite (few adverse effects occur): http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/entrez/query...l=pubmed_DocSum

So you can begin to see the difficulties in trying to assess your question. Other factors that would need to be controlled would include: dose, number of times, other drugs etc.

So unfortunately, there really is no clear answer to your question. I would consider telling your doctor. All in all though, I'd say your chances of having a normal baby are pretty good.

this isn't official medical advice or anything,

but i read somewhere that drug use during the first trimester isn't too terribly bad for the fetus. I think I read that when I was reading about Courtney Love's kid, and how she mainlined heroin the first trimester, but 'ol Francis Bean came out just fine.

I would think that the worst possible effects it could have on your child are ADD/depression. But if you only did it once, I seriously doubt that would even happen. Pretty sure the subtleties of the brain don't start developing until late in the game, if I can remember that section of my nuero classes correctly.

Anyway, I think you have a healthy baby there, no big deal, just don't screw up again.

and whoever said 'get an abortion' is a complete dick who needs to take a 9mm aspirin.

don't worry, honey. In all probability, your kid is fine. Perhaps in addition to your pregnancy vitamins you could take some SAMe or 5HTP? ASK A DOCTOR ABOUT THAT FIRST, though. I dunno if pregnant women can take those supplements, but it seems like they would help the fetus's nueral development.

there is a chapter in Pihkal about this, shulgins book, a pregnant woman had taken an un known quantity of mdma, from what i heard the baby was born and showed no signs of any health issues.

I would say that 1, you should look up what your pill was, post the shape, size color and stamp in here and ill look it up for you.

E is very commonly adulterated with many other things, some of which might not even be harmful to a baby.

Ya I doubt a single Roll is gonna adversely affect your baby if you choose to have it. Humankind and life in general is very resilient. I think you'd have to have been using often to cause a negative affect. And I havent' seen any information on E causing any specific birth defects on it own (like finasteride and many other prescription drugs do). So I wouldn't worry about it.

Basically what Jon said. :P

Pz,

Gary
