Pregnant girlfriend - how much do we tell our doctor?
    #10810197 -

Well, it's come that time...it looks like my gf is pregnant! We only actually started trying this past cycle, too!

I started to wonder, as I get ready to book us a doctors appointment, how much do we tell our doctor? I'm talking about drug use, here. My gf has quit everything except a little pot (she needs it to stay sane), but do we discuss this with our doc?

I have heard that, in some places, they will take your baby away if there is any confirmed drug use during the pregnancy. If they find anything in a blood test, for example, they'll come and whisk your baby away at birth!

I want to be honest with my doctor - I have been up to now, with my own drug use, so shouldn't I tell her everything? Let her know that we do understand the risks and are taking steps to minimize them (getting a vape)?

Or will they take my child away from me?

I live in Ontario, Canada, by the way.

Taking drugs or smoking while pregnant is bad news.

Wow...you don't see that you are damaging your child's health? If she stops now don't worry about telling the doctor anything. If your girlfriend knowingly makes decisions that could potentially damage your child's health then she doesn't need to be a mother. Everything's a drug? That is bullshit. Not food.

There is zero evidence that marijuana is "harmful" if used correctly during pregnancy.

Prove me wrong.

I'm glad you did your research, but there is also plenty of research indicating the potential for adverse effects of MJ use during pregnancy.

You are definitely taking an irresponsible gamble.

As toy our specific question, any physician that learns off illegal drug use or other behaviors that may cause harm to a child will probably try and intervene.

Is it completely unreasonable for her to quit smoking for the duration of the pregnancy?  I think you should tell the doctor the truth.  He might need that information later on down the road.

I don't know how I feel about smoking during pregnancy, there are a lot of strong ideas about it.  Here a thread from babycenter.com about smoking pot during pregnancy... you may or may not find it helpful.

It seems as if you don't understand what everyone else is saying, so allow me to restate it.

Doing drugs while pregnant is a bad idea.

I have about 8000 years and quite a few personal friends as anecdotal evidence that it does nothing. There is one actual study that I know of which says that kids born to cannabis using mothers have higher intelligence.

Awesome.  And I just posted three indicating the potential for adverse effects.  In sum your research means not listening to sources you are against.

I didn't read any research on this matter, but if THC is able to affect an adult's brain in the way it does, I can only imagine that while the brain is forming and growing, it will affect it even more. Do you agree with me up to this point, or are you thinking that THC doesn't affect the fetal brain? If you do agree that it does, then the only thing that's left to figure out is how this brain is being affected, which, from your own words, is still unknown. Unknown is different than safe.
Are you willing to take this risk and simply hope your kid will be ok? To each his own, I personally know I wouldn't do this.

Yes, but this would mean that he might actually have to change his mind, which is unacceptable.

I note that two of the studies you posted make no mention of "potential for adverse effects". One of them does mention adverse effects, but only in stating that more evidence is needed to determine what (if any) those adverse effects are.

This would be my question. I don't really believe the hysteria about pot and pregnancy, but if there was ever a time to take a break, this is it.

I do think there's a disproportionate amount of moralizing when it comes to prenatal pot compared to, say, raising your kids to eat junk food. I don't think the moral attacks are helpful here, guilt doesn't change minds very well, IMO.

I have an friend who smoked pot while pregnant. Her daughter is six now, a healthy and brilliant child. But she's often a little too excitable, and has real trouble focusing in class.

This may just be her personality, but maybe it's something else. My friend still feels guilty, and wonders if she has made her daughter's life harder than it has to be. She'll never know for sure.

Re: Pregnant girlfriend - how much do we tell our doctor? [Re: MushroomTrip]

Interesting facts:

Quote:
First of all, smoking anything during pregnancy deprives the fetus of oxygen. Just as smoking tobacco is discouraged in pregnant women, so is smoking marijuana. Smoking any type of substance interferes with the fetus's blood supply. This can mean the fetus doesn't get enough oxygen, and s/he may be born smaller in both weight and length. Smaller babies have a higher risk of other problems after birth, such as infections, severe jaundice, difficulty feeding, breathing problems, low blood sugar, difficulty regulating temperature, bleeding into the brain, and problems with vision.

Thanks WC! I have thought about that...but personally I tend to think that those types of things (psychological) are mostly caused by upbringing and environment more than anything.

I also have friends who smoked pot (actually smoked...no vapes) during their pregnancies and all their kids seem to be fine.

I don't have any kids myself, but the 90% of my peer group who do tell me that as soon as you discover you're pregnant, your needs cease to matter.  You are now completely responsible for this itty bitty, helpless, human being in a giant world full of good and bad.

Why not give it a strong, healthy foundation to start off on?  It's just pot.  It will still be there in 9 months...
