deer trackin with a little encounter

well i went out in search of deer took my cam and i found some cool lookin' fungi....






Cap= white with a tint of tan
stem= didn't see any it was growing out of a log(type unknown)
gills= white 2mm spread between
bruises=brown
scent=smells like a store bought mushroom
extra= they were growing with many skunk cabbage and ferns, there were 5 or more though out the whole forest

I want to say oyster but the caps are a bit tan not white...
Better waite for a more knowledgeable answer...

Those are oysters. Oysters be white, tan, or gray depending on age and conditions.

Definately wait for a definate ID, Davetx has had some incorrect calls lately (no offence man :laugh: ) and he is probably right on this one.
BUT!!!!!
-as you know mushrooms arent the most forgiving. "Close but no cigar" just doesnt cut it. DONT EAT IT yet, it'll only be a few hours before one of the "old hat" experts replies. :thumbup:

There are no look alike oysters unles you hapend to be looking up and have a bird shit on your specs. Trust me on this one.

Wrong DaveTX.

There are many species of mushroom which resemble the Oyster Mushroom (Pleurotus ostreatus), especially when they are small. Pleurocybella porrigens, Cheimonophyllum candidissimus, Phyllotopsis nidulans, and Crepidotus applanatus come to mind.

Though it is listed as edible in many field guides, Pleurocybella porrigens was blamed for several deaths in 2004.

Gillen's mushrooms do resemble oysters, but something about them doesn't look right to me. If I had them in my hand I could tell, but from what I can see, they look iffy. Best not to eat them.

I'm not trying to put down davetx - , but really - dont risk your health on it.
I wouldnt ever ID a mushroom I'm not sure on and had experience with - and at the moment thats amanitas and Subbies. Davetx has made a few bad calls in the past, so wait untill you get confirmation on his ID before ingesting it.

Whats the rush anyways?

Take a spore print, take better pictures of the gills, google the Latin names I gave you. With a little work you should be able to ID them.

ight *sigh* oh well.....back to hunting for something worth wild. i was kinda hoping for something good even just eatable,(cookin with mushrooms active or not is gOOOd)

There are a few features you should check that will ensure that those are one of the edible Pleurotus species.

Look closely at the gill edges. They should not be serrated, but should be smooth.

If any bit of stem was on the side of one of the caps, it should be fuzzy (downy).

Make a spore print on white paper. It should come out white or pale lilac. You will still be able to see a white spore print on white paper. Be sure to leave the mushroom on the paper overnight so you get a good heavy deposit of spore powder.

If you can verify all of these features (there are other features as well, but they are clear from your photographs), then these are edible. If any of them are wrong, then they are something else and should not be eaten.
