I am not sure if was a black or a brown bear, I said in my original post I only think it was a black bear. It could have been a brown bear, as there was brown by its nose and other parts.

Lol deer are giant squirrels

There's no chance it was a brown bear since you're in CT.  Like I said, black bears are calm as shit. And next time you see one in the woods, get a picture cause the seem to be really hard to find if there's no trash can around.:thumbup:

It's just that it was coming towards me, if I had stumbled into it by accident and just kind of backed off and it didn't seem interested in me it would have been different. It was just a sense of impending doom watching it approach. I just don't think bears are anything to fuck with. I did some research, and am realizing that pretty much the entire area by the pond has classic bear marks on a bunch of trees and logs, if you know what I'm talking about. I'm pretty sure my entire backyard is part of a territory so to speak, the deep scratches and bites and general destruction is unmistakable. Hope my luteus log doesn't get "marked" haha. I think I was trespassing in its territory and It got pissed or something. I really, really want to think of the bears in my area as chill but I think if your in there territory they're not. This may not be the case, though.

Yah, but doesn't a jogger get eaten about every year up on Mt. Tam?  And cats just love the stalk and drop game, they can't help it.  That's my theory about why the joggers get eaten, they're just bobbin' along down the path in oblivious ipod mode, irrestible.

And while the stats are low, I don't want to be the next one.  Not paranoid but situationally aware...

It probably helps in animal encounters if you keep your cool, if you're freaked out they know you're unpredictable and that freaks THEM out. 

I hear the black bears are pacifists, but brown bears are to be fully respected.  Dunno if I could tell them apart, I think they're both basically black, tho' the brown bear is larger, so it's helpful if they'll stand next to each other while you figure it out.

The standard around here is:

Q: How do you tell black bear scat from brown bear scat?
A: Black bear scat is full of berries and has a vegetable smell.  Brown bear scat is full of little bells and smells like pepper spray.

Seems the prevailing wisdom with predators is:

Don't ever play with baby critters, mom may be right behind that bush and you're in the wrong.
Don't look 'em straight in the eye.  That's aggressive and you'll piss 'em off.
Don't run.  You are prey if you run.
Stand your ground, get big and squawk a lot.  Make some kung fu sounds.  LOL

I had a badbad feeling a few years back in a path that dipped steeply down into a mini ravine at the base of the dunes here, very tunneley, overgrown, dark, like Mordor dark.  My little voice said "not today" and I turned around and beat it outa there with the dog.

Bees lose their stingers after stinging and a lot of them are not aggressive, it'd be worse to step on one of those ground wasp hives and get sprayed with alarm pheromones to the point they chase and sting you relentlessly.  Rattlesnakes I always hear or see before I am at the point of stepping on them and they are always happy to go the other direction.

Ya I have to say when I see snakes I try to follow them for as long as I can, very cool. Have had multiple "pet" snakes and had a half dozen garter snakes born in my hand, not joking. Snakes are not a problem at all, I would be more worried about wasps. Haven't run into them yet.

No way, not even once every 10 years. Mountain lion attacks are extremely rare. In fact, I don't even see Mt. Tam on this list https://www.dfg.ca.gov/wildlife/lion/attacks.html

Mountain lions have got to be the most beautiful and gracefull creatures ive seen in the wild. But you wont see them unless they want you to, ive only seen their asses trottin off in the bushes.

I can attest to bears being dangerous because im married to one and she gets fiesty or horny in the mornings, sometimes both which can be especially frightening. Best way to deal with a charging mama bear is to lay on your back, whip yer cock out and let her have her way

I have have had many close encounters with bear and mountain lions, never had a problem with either one. Humans don't make for an easy food. Contrary to popular belief, a young male bear is the most likely to attack as they are raging with testosterone and looking to steak their claim to their territory, but you still have to really scare them within very close proximity for them to even care. You still are much more likely to be injured in a car accident than by any critters in woods. Though the majority of people I know or have known live in bear and mountain lion habitat and I've never heard of anyone who has been attacked by either, though most everyone has seen one or both in their neighborhood.

It is always good to prepared when out in the woods, but it is a waste of your time and energy to stress about large animal attacking you. Unless you are in Alaska or someplace really wild.

Yellow jackets are my biggest legitimate fear while mushroom hunting. I have accidentally gotten too close to nests before and they show no mercy. They sting multiple times and will chase you down for a hundred feet or more.

Hmph.  I lived in Sunnyvale/Mt. View from '78-'01 and I was sure that in that time there were at least two attacks on Mt. Tam in the media.  I sure can't find 'em with a cursory online search, tho'  My apologies.  Appears I'm quite senile already.  I blame the 70's.

That's good, tho'.  Now the next time I think of a 100lb cat dropping on me from a tree branch I can just forget it.  ;-)
