Yea, exactly, I'm more worried about poison oak than bears.

No they are not!!!  They run away when you yell at them or pretty much any time they see you.  I have seen them many times while mushroom hunting.  Being scared of bears is like being scared of squirrels.

I usually sleep outside without a tent in bear country.  Once a bear walked up to me while I was sleeping, he was about ten feet away when I woke up.  I jumped up and yelled at it and it ran away.  They always run away.  There is nothing scary about them unless you are throwing rocks at its cubs or something.

  I'm much more frightened of cougars than bears, but even with them if you stand your ground and act big and tough they'll slink off and leave you be.

I don't understand why anyone would be frightened of cougars either.  You are more likely to die from a lightning strike or bee sting.

I'm more scared of poisonous spiders, skunks, and bee hives where I'm at... Crazy story man, I'm really glad I don't have to worry about bears.

What shrooms did you find? Lmfao, I'm kidding (partially).

I totally agree with Alan, bears in the woods aren't anything to be scared of. They always run.

I can't think of any wildlife I've encountered that worried me. A hog took a run at me once, but he was probably just trying to just get away.

The only problem I had with my encounter was the fact that is was coming towards me. It did not run away when it saw me. It started chasing me when I hit the pond. I know running from a bear isn't smart but I was barely in control.
I would want to carry a gun for security. Just so when the time comes again I would know that if it started charging me and was about to fuck me up I would be o.k.
I would mostly use it as a noise deterrent, and probably fire a shot into the ground away from everything and watch it run away.
Again, it was coming towards me and showed no signs that it was afraid of me. What do you think it would have done? I would hope it might just smell me, check me out, and jump in the pond and start swimming like I have seen them do before. But the fact remains that it had the potential to seriously fuck  me up, and I just want to have a reason to stay calm and not run and have it chase me next time. I don't want to shoot anything...

It's not a bad idea to make some noise when bush whacking through tall brush. Like others said unless you startle them or they have cubs it's not really an issue. You should be more worried about moose honestly. They kill more people than bears if I'm not mistaken. I never carry a gun in the woods unless I'm hunting. It's not a bad idea though. Bear spray is probably more effective anyways.

I didn't realize bear attacks were so rare. I've seen bears on trails but they were small black bears which don't scare me as much as grizzly bears but still just the thought that a bear could really kill you with little effort still makes me nervous.

I think seeing grizzly man high wasn't helpful either

I don't worry about bears, I look for them and chase them around with a camera when I see one.

Nothing.

Bears don't just go up to people and fuck them up.  Even if you are sleeping and they are hungry.  Sure, you get the occasional crazy one, but that is like one person a year on average.  There are a ton of bears out there and a lot of people in bear habitat, car accidents are orders of magnitude more likely to do you in.

Guns are too heavy to be carrying around on the 1 in 100,000,000 chance that its your turn to get attacked by a bear.  And would likely just piss it off more.

Actually that is a bad idea, because then you never see any wildlife!  I always walk as quietly as possible to maximize my chances of seeing wild animals before they see me.

You don't need to be paranoid of nature.  We are part of nature.  Act like it.  If you want something to be paranoid about, be paranoid of police or ticks or car accidents or trigger happy pot growers.

Nothing like running into the local wildlife during a Mycology Excursion. Next time snap a photo of the bear, I mean you at least need a picture to validate the story.  :cheer:  :cheer:  :cheer:

I think its even less than that.

Quote:
The bad news is that some spiders do bite people, and these bites can be dangerous. The good news is that spider bites are actually quite rare events. A recent summary of reported spider bites in the United States between 1989 and 1993 included fewer than 5,000 incidents per year. Only a few of the bites of widow spiders were medically serious, but over 80% of recluse bites were considered serious. Only about 10% of other spider bites had serious consequences. These numbers seem small when compared to the over 800,000 dog bites that required stitches each year (source: Centers for Disease Control). During the study period, dog bites were responsible for 20 deaths per year, and auto-deer collisions were associated with 130 annual deaths. You might be surprised to learn that there were no spider-bite related fatalities during that four-year period.

Worried patients arrive at the hospital saying "I don’t know what bit me but it hurts so much it must have been a spider..." and unfortunately doctors are sometimes willing to accept this premise. In reality, many injuries that are reported as spider bites are actually caused by other small animals (fleas, lice, mosquitoes, biting flies, ant bites and stings, etc.). One national study of 600 cases of suspected spider bites established that approximately 80% were not actually caused by spiders.  A particularly famous headline story involved a group of injuries associated with orchard workers in Florida.  The workers' sores were first thought to be the result of spider bites, but they turned out to be secondary infections following spine punctures from working on the trees.

Spider bites are most serious when the victim is very young or aged.  Particularly sensitive persons of any age may also have an adverse reaction to animal bites. Many of us know someone who is very sensitive to bee or wasp stings. The bite of a normally harmless spider might be a serious problem for such a person. The venoms of spiders are the result of spiders’ adaptation to its predatory habits. The poison is generally most effective at killing their natural prey, usually an insect. Dangerous spider venoms usually act against the nervous system (neurotoxic) or the blood (hemotoxic), but humans are often unaffected by spider venom because of our large size and different physiology.

http://osumarion.osu.edu/SpiderWeb/Spider%20Bites.htm

Quote:
There is no spider species anywhere that can properly be called "deadly." Obviously, a few people have died from spider venom, but I know of no species anywhere on earth capable of causing death in humans in as much as 10% of cases, even if untreated. If the person bitten obtains medical aid, death from genuine spider bite ("mystery bites" falsely blamed on spiders don't count) is almost unknown in North America and a decided rarity worldwide.

I understand that bear attacks are very unlikely, however the way it was descending the cliff was very menacing, it would stop, look at me, and go even faster, it wanted to be in close quarters with me for whatever reason based on the fact that again it was coming towards me. Being in close quarters with a wild animal that again has the POTENTIAL to fuck you up is never a good idea, regardless of how often it happens. What about the one bear who's a shitty Hunter and hasn't eaten in a week.. what about the fact that they recently came out of hibernation..

I just want to say, as scary as it was, I was still able to appreciate it. I agree with you, we are a part of nature and I try to sneak up on wildlife whenever possible. I got literally within 5 feet of a deer twice in a row within 3 hours on the same day. Even tried to hand feed it but it got spooked. My point is, I will never know why the bear made the decision to come towards me. That's the only thing I know for sure, was that it was coming towards me. I have never had a wild animal come at me, sure I can walk up to deer but they sure as hell don't walk up to me. So why was the first animal that came towards me coincidentally something that has a row of knives on each paw? Because it wasnt afraid of me. If it would have done "nothing" as you say than it would have had every reason to hang back and not check me out.

Again, I didn't startle it.
I didn't sneak up on it, I didn't get between it and its cubs, I didn't threaten it, and it still came at me. I don't know what else to say.
You are implying that I have absolutely nothing to worry about in terms of bears, but when you are literally chased through the woods..

Bears are awesome, majestic creatures that I hold a high level of respect for. I would love to see a spirit bear in my lifetime.

However, you simply cannot deny / ignore the fact that they are dangerous. There is no if, and, or but.

If I didn't run I would have been in a close quarters encounter with a bear. Not because I snuck up on it, or because it caught me sleeping, but because it made the conscious decision to come towards me on its own accord.

What would have happened, I can't say because I got the hell out of there.

Can't say I would've reacted differently, but apparently you're supposed to stand your ground when a black bear comes at you. It was probably just trying to chase you out of its territory. Check out this video:

You really need to take into consideration the margins of error here. Yes I'm more likely to get in a car crash, because I get in my car every day. I'm more likely to die from everything you listed because I am exposed to then much more frequently than I am exposed to wild bears. It's not every day you run into a bear, because who the fuck pts themselves in that kind of situation. The only people, are people who go in the woods.
If you go in the woods, you risk running into a bear.
If you get in your car, you risk getting in an accident.

I am in my car way more than I am in the woods, as is 99% of the population.

So it goes without saying that more people die from car accidents because more people get into them in the first place...

Ah I'm on my kindle so I can't watch it, but I'm assuming it's a video of some dude scaring off a bear.

But ya, when it happens pretty much everything you know goes out the window. I knew I wasn't supposed to run, and  I knew I should have picked up a stick or something and stretch. If I had had a conclusive means of self defense I feel like I would have been able to stand my ground but I was scared like a bitch haha

Lol. This thread has me rolling. First let me say that I've never seen a brown bear and that they kind of scare me but I see black bears about once every other month during their season and there is no fear involved. I've even taken my 3 year old son to go see them while they're digging through the trash in the driveway. The only way I'd get nervous around them is if they are clearly rabbid. OP's story sounds like it just didn't care you were there and was just looking for ants and whatever else they eat where you were.  Even with cubs the attack rate is low. Honestly, I think black bears are probably the funniest looking animals we have around here and I try to get as close as possible when I see them. I'm more afraid of getting close to deer that I am of black bears. At least I know I'm not going to get attacked by a bear but deer are like giant squirrels and there's no telling whats going on in their tiny, frantic little brains.

BTW, that bear in bethesda picked the absolute worste place to go. NIH looks more like a military base than anything.  The entrance looks like a damn border crossing. I saw it in the news and I just can't imagine the screaming from all the near inner city women on the street.
