substitutes?
    #562804 - 02/25/02 04:21 PM (22 years, 6 months ago)

Hey guys-

I was wondering if there was any substitute to using vermicultie when doing the PF-Tek... I called all the local places and everyone was like "Umm... No." and hung up on me. Stupid people. Could something like potting soil with added 'water retainer' be used? Anyways... What about substituting home-ground enriched rice flour for BRF?  Also, in regards to your answers, why? Thanks for the replys in advance

nope.....your gonna need Verm.

I tried making jars with Coco Coir instead of Verm.....that was a no go.

Keep looking for Verm.....or move on to a Grain Tek.

I thought that you /had/ to use vermicultie w/ all teks... Guess I need more research heh. I have plenty of grains and stuff around here. I guess I will just have to look into the Grain Tek thingy. Thanks,

the first time i accidently used perlite, it worked, but not as good... i had some perlite and i thought it was vermiculite.... it did work and the jars did fully colonize...

Is this weird? [Re: LSD_4me]
    #562864 - 02/25/02 05:36 PM (22 years, 6 months ago)

Hmm... Thats interesting. Listen to this- I was bored one day, so I went into my backyard and gathered some caps from these fallen shrooms (they were old and they were covered in black... spores? They spread them EVERYWHERE!) and I put them into some water, and let it soak overnight. The following day, I cooked up a little bit of white rice in the microwave. I then dumped the solution of soaked caps onto the top of the rice (which had cooled) and I took the pieces of the caps out. Then, I put a little bit of perlite on top of it all. I topped it off with a damped paper towel, and I put the lid on the container, and stashed it in a dark place. I remembered about it today, and I looked into the container (it was one of those butter tubs, so I couldn't see throught the sides....) and to my suprise, there was what appeared to be MYCELIUM growing in it... I'm just beginning, and this was my first, half-hearted attempt at reliveing my bordem... It deffinately worked... Whats your guys opinions?

I was told that peat would work.

Shit, I'm going to make up some jars using peat and see for myself. Hell I'll do some using grow brick too.

Why use perlite if you can use peat or grow brick instead? Besides, I don't have any perlite. I've never used it and I doubt that I ever will. I'm going to make some PF jars up tonight using some left over casing from the 'fridge...It's a mixture of grow brick, vermiculite, and lime. I know, there's vermiculite in there but I don't feel like breaking a sweat busting off a chunk of grow brick just for this.

Man- I called all the stores looking for verm too and they did the same thing to me
"Like ahhh i ahh don't think so"' anyway i went to the same stores i called and they did have it. The people that work the desk usually don't have a clue what the store carries so your best bet is to go and look for your self .My two cent anyway

Ok Roadkill. My peat is in bags and easily usable. I will try both just for fun. One using the left over coir casing and the other using plain peat. I'll mix these up both using a ground up mixture of brown rice and bird seed. I wanted to try this before but I had forgotten about it until now.

I honestly think the key to this method is inoculating with live tissue but I'll stick with spores for now and see what happens. If that doesn't work well I'll use an isolate next time to test my theory.

I can't understand why so many people have a hard time finding vermiculite
Wally-mart carries it on the american side and Canadian Tyre sells it on the polite side
u can also get it from any gardening supply store and/or most other hardware stores

I guarantee if you go into ANY gardening store or Walmart you will have no trouble finding vermiculite right next to the potting soils. Just cause some dum ass on the phone doesn't have any words in his vocabulary over 4 letters long does not mean they don't have it. This stuff is totally essential to gardeners and shroomers alike.

Why not try doing a search online for gardening stores that take online orders? You'll find vermiculite in no time! It'll be shipped to your door asap.
