I too have heard one incidence of success using perlite, on the other hand, I never heard any failures.
Verm. holds moisture for your myc. to drink. Perlite doesn't serve this purpose, though mixed in your substrate, It seems like it would hold moisture.
or, try a search

perlite is not a very good alternative to vermicultie.
IMO a good alernative to vermiculite is not doing the pf tek.
Right.
If you can't get vermiculite, use a different tek.

Anno, which tek would you suggest if verm. is not available in my area?

I was planning on doing WBS/perlite and adding in watering crystals to compensate for the water lost due to lack of verm.

wild bird seed is super easy here

1. take the wbs and put it in a pot
2. put water in the pot to the top of the wbs + 2"
3. water will cover the seed plus 2 inches
4. bring to a hard boil
5. then reduce to simmer
6. remember to stir every 5 minutes
7. let it simmer for 40 minutes
8. them scoop some wbs into a strainer and rinse with cold water
9. then, bounce the strainer to help it drip
10. when it doesnt drip anymore, laod into jars about 3/4 of the way

11. pc it for 1.25 hours at 15psi
12. as the pc returns to 0psi, remove the jars and shake
13. put them back in the pc to cool
