Vermiculite substitute?
    #1534212 - 05/09/03 11:50 AM (13 years, 7 months ago)

Ok. In my town you can not find verm. anywhere. It's been discontinued at all the major stores and most of the gardens. The only place that has it sells it in 6 cubic feet which is about half the size of my apartment.

What are proven alternatives to vermiculite for casing purposes?

Casing as in an additive such as the 50/50+ tek. I'd like to keep my casing loose and airy so as to facilitate faster colonization. My current casing is plain potting soil and I have a severe case of overlay that I need to take care of soon. I was going to use the 50/50 coir/verm mixture on this batch but I guess I'll have to use strait coir.

There is no substitute for Vermiculite..  It's the perfect PH, it holds a lot of water, and can be stored anywhere for years and years.

Lowes and Home Depot both have it in little bags for $3.69 :P and it's a fine Vermiculite which blows ass.

I get it from Farm n Feed stores 4 Cu. Ft. for $11.99..  It's great for home gardening to, don'tyaknow.  The stuff I get is a course cut which is great for making little pockets and valleys for pinning.

Get it in the huge bag, you will use it all in no time.

There is NO substitute, Just buy the big bag, and you wont have to worry about buying anymore for awhile.
