Does anyone know about depression and applying for jobs?

What I mean by this is, I heard that some companies when they are thinking of hiring you first do a background check including your medical records to see if you have ever been dagnosed with any mental problems.
Do companies do those checks? do they ask for such in the applications?

now they cant get access to your medical records without your permission, but not granting them permission would obviously lead to them knowing you have had something in the past.

Ive been wondering about this for a while because for the longest time my dad didnt want to get his headchecked for this reason, but I dont know if he was being honest or just paranoid or straight-up lied so that he wouldnt have to deal with it (my mom wanted him to go and he didnt think it was necesary...).


so whats the deal?

no medical records are supposed to be sealed. Even judges can barely get medical records of someone.

It's pretty much impossible for them to get med records now unless it's some crazy government job or something where your mental health could possibly put people's lives in danger.

That's without your permission though. Of course they can make you sign things pre employment giving up your rights,but I think in most states it's still really hard for them to do that.

Honestly, it sounds like a lie or paranoia to me.

I'm not a lawyer though, so obviously I could be wrong. If you really need a solid answer I would consult some kind of legal referal service, some of which are free.
