Are there any poisonus mushrooms that are very close to looking like a psilocybe mushroom.(NY)

I want to start hunting for three reasons: 1) I like science and the idea of finding things on my own and identifying them sounds fun; 2) I want to eat pyschedellic mushrooms like I have done a while back. 3) I would like to sell them to friends for cheap and make some extra cash.
Well I dont want to poison my friends, or myself for that matter, but, I still want to hunt. I was wondering if anyone knew if there are any poisonus look-alikes to any psilocybe mushrooms found in NY?
Thanks -Thumbs up

An inexperienced hunter could mistake deadly Galerina and poisonous Mycena species for Psilocybes. The best way to avoid danger is to carefully study the species you are seeking, and when you think you have found it post photos and descriptions here for verification.

This is fucking illegal and should not be allowed here on this board.
Selling and distributing mushrooms for money of a controlled substance is highly illegal.
Good thing there are few mushrooms anywhere in New york.
DO not talk of comminting felonies on this board.

Nobody at the Shroomery sells mushrooms. It really is bad form to sell that which God has freely given. Besides, selling mushrooms is illegal and it involves both the seller and the buyer in the war on drugs, which is sorta beneath most of our members. Anyone who wishes to experience the profound altered state of consciousness produced by consuming psilocybian fungi should hunt them or grow his own.
Hunting and growing is how we opt out of the war on drugs.

Annnyyywaaayyy....
To answer your questions there are some look-a-like mushrooms that you could easily misidentify from hallucinogenic mushrooms. I certainly, certainly would not be passing out samples of what you picked (expecting reimbursement or not) to your friends or anyone else unless you considered yourself somewhat of an amateur psilocybin mycologist. Basically, you could easily fuck up badly.
Galerina magnita has been mistaken for wood-loving psilocybes and Conocybe filaris could be found growing terrestrially in a paddock and has been mistaken for dung-loving psilocybes. Both are deadly poisonous. Eat them and you may be relying on a liver & kidney transplant to save your life.
That's not to mention the scores of unknown & undocumented mushrooms that you could mistake for psilocybes, mushrooms that nobody knows whether they are poisonous or not. Take the below examples of look-a-likes that I found growing in a cow paddock in cow poop right next to Psilocybe cubensis. I have no idea what they are or if they are poisonous, but they well could be. Nobody has been able to ID them for me yet.
Having said all that, if you're going to do it anyway, make sure the mushrooms bruise blue, have gills (not pores), and have a black or purplish-dark-brown spore print. If you do that at-least you will lessen your chances of poisoning yourself by a very large margin.

Hmmm ... I had considered that but I thought maybe not because they were growing directly from dung and I thought rugosoannulata were a wood-loving species? And when is say directly, I mean directly out of a huge fresh pile and nowhere else. Also the cap colour (I know the least reliable source of identification) was in no way the typical burgundy maroon colour. They were whitish and yellow in the centre, similar to a cubensis. The older ones were more tanned (as pictured).
Definitely some kind of Stropharia, and you're probably right, but just out of curiosity, how sure are you on that ID?

I have found Stropharia rugoso-annulata growing from wood, straw, rotten hay bails... never dung, but it seems they will eat anything. The upturned teeth on the veil is a dead give away. No other species (that I am aware of) shows that trait. This species is also highly variable in color, ranging from deep burgundy red, through neutral brown, to light beige, all with the upturned teeth on the annulus and deep purple gills.

Wow ... and they're edible too hey? I could have had a feast. Easily could have filled the boot of the car with them. Some of them were huge, caps 30cm accross.

Yep, choice edible. I've only tried them once, but I have a feeling that many of us will be feasting on them at the gathering this weekend.

oO_wombat_Oo,
P. cubensis does not grow in New York State. And Galerina marginata grows in lawns but not in pastures.
There are, liberty caps in the northern portion of the state touching along the Canadian Border region, ANd some Panaeolus subbalteatus. AS for P. cubensis, it is rare to find them north of Georgia. A few in South Carolina every once in a while but not north of there.
P. cubensis, in America, grow int he southeast to centeral southwest. They grow from Georgia to Florida and Florida to Texas and southern Oklahoma, the latter also once in a while.
And magic mushrooms in pastures would be extremely rare in New York, especially since magic mushrooms in that region are not found in manure. There are no magic mushrooms in manure in New York, maybe a few Panaeolus subbalteatus, but then their main habitat is compost heaps and haystacks at riding stables and at racetracks in thr stable shavings mixed with horse manure, nut shells and compost, and in America it is also extrememly rare for cubes to be in horse shit by theirtselves.
Panaeolus species prefer horse shit to cow and buffalo shit although they can share those various habitats.
